Agbonlahor wants to captain Villa
Tuesday 26th April 2011, 3:00PM BST.
Gabby Agbonlahor has revealed his dream of one day captaining Villa and admitted he could never imagine playing for anyone else.
The 24-year-old striker has endured a largely frustrating season and, since the club splashed out £24million on Darren Bent in January, has been in and out of the starting line-up.
It prompted muted speculation of a move elsewhere but Agbonlahor has been assured by the Villa management that he is still very much in their plans for the future.
And the Villa frontman, who signed a new deal at the club until 2015, hopes to be in the running to be club skipper when Bulgarian midfielder Stiliyan Petrov eventually relinquishes the position.
Agbonlahor said: “It would be nice to get the armband in a one-off game or to be the regular captain.
“But that’s not really on my mind at the moment but maybe one day in the future because Villa means everything to me really.
“When you see other players that are linked with other clubs you don’t really see my name linked with anywhere else.
“Other clubs out there know that this is where I want to play my football. Being local helps and if you ask any of the lads that live locally they will never want to leave the club.
“That is me and Villa. I’m committed to the club and that’s why I signed a new contract.
“A number of players have signed long-term contracts because it’s where we want to play our football.
“I’ve got no reason to go anywhere else.”
Birmingham-born Agbonlahor chalked up his 200th appearance for Villa earlier in the season and admitted there have been some special memories since he scored on his debut against Everton in March 2006.
He said: “I’ve had big achievements in the five years I’ve been in the first-team squad. The 5-1 win against Blues and reaching the Carling Cup final were big moments for me.
“The hat-trick against Manchester City was a big thing too. I remember it well – it was a tough game for about 70 minutes and I got that late hat-trick.
“To make my debut when I did and to get to 200 games in a short space of time is a big thing.
“It’s a big achievement and hopefully I can keep going and get to three or four hundred appearances.
“Goals are also important. Ask anyone that question, especially a striker, and they will tell you goals are important but as long as the team are doing well you are happy.
“But getting a goal makes you even happier. When I was younger it felt really special scoring in front of the Holte End and it still feels special now.”
