Downing’s challenge to Villa’s England stars

Stewart Downing today urged Villa’s England stars to carry the form from their national team into this weekend’s vital Premier League clash against Everton.

Villa’s trio of England players impressed in the Three Lions’ 2-0 victory over Wales in the Euro 2012 qualifier last weekend and also in the 1-1 draw with Ghana in a friendly on Tuesday.

But attention now switches back to the Premier League clash at Goodison Park and, with Villa just a point above the drop zone, Downing is eager for his international team-mates to perform to the same level against the Toffees.

“Coming to England gives you confidence if you play well in the team,” said Downing. “Darren Bent got a goal last Saturday and Ashley Young has played very well, so we aim to put that into our club performances now.

“We’ve got big tests ahead for us but it is pleasing and hopefully we can produce that back at Villa.

“Mark Albrighton played well for the under-21s and Nathan Delfouneso got a goal there as well.

“It has been a good week but we have to transfer that into our club football now and get results.”

Downing impressed against Ghana after being handed a place in the starting line-up by coach Fabio Capello. But the 26-year-old winger realises he has a long way to go to establish himself as an England regular.

“I was delighted, personally I thought I did OK and as a team we played some really good stuff so it was a good night all-round,” added Downing.

“For me, the pleasing thing is to get 90 minutes, to be involved and I’ll try and do my best and hopefully that is good enough.

“There is a lot of competition for places, especially on the wings and in midfield so you’ve got to take your chance when called upon.

“The pleasing thing for me is that there is a lot of strength in depth now and players can come in and take other people’s places.”

Downing’s international and club team-mate Young felt there was a freshness about the England side for the game against Ghana.

“Things have changed. The manager said he was going to bring change to the squad and I think he has done that,” said Young.
