Darren Bent: I feel the £24m pressure
Wednesday 23rd February 2011, 11:27AM GMT.
Darren Bent today confirmed he feels the “pressure” of his £24m transfer fee but is confident he is strong enough to cope with the burden of his pricetag.
The 27-year-old striker has just completed his first month at Villa Park since his move from Sunderland and has gone some way towards paying back his fee with two goals in five games.
And Bent is keen to add to that tally against Blackburn at the weekend when Villa return to Premier League action.
“It definitely does add pressure,” he said. “Obviously for me it is pressure I have dealt with before because I went to Spurs for big money. But I think my transfer fee has obviously now been eclipsed.
“A lot of people seem to have forgotten about my transfer now so I’ve just got on with it! I’ve enjoyed every minute since I’ve been here. I definitely made the right decision.”
The Villa striker also admitted he was taken aback by the crazy end to the January transfer window which saw Fernando Torres leave Liverpool for Chelsea in a £50m deal while Andy Carroll made a £35m switch to Anfield from Newcastle.
“It was mad!” added Bent.
“More so because of Andy Carroll’s transfer to Liverpool because he has played half a season in the Premier League and he’s gone for £35m, so it is a bit crazy.
“It was a bit crazy but it is the way the game is going at the moment — the money is going up and the stakes are getting raised in the Premier League. People have got to do what they’ve got to do to get players in and get results.”
