Fernando Torres holds key to Ashley Young’s future

Fernando Torres’ impending £50m move to Chelsea could trigger a frantic transfer deadline day scramble which may see Liverpool raid Villa for Ashley Young.

Torres’ written transfer request and determination to leave Anfield means there is no way back for him at Liverpool, and his exit is seemingly only a matter of time as the clubs thrash out a fee.

Young, who has 18 months left on his contract, has long been a favourite of Reds boss Kenny Dalglish and he could now launch a bid of between £18m-£20m to tempt Villa.

Winger Young has remained tightlipped on his future after stopping talks on a new deal a few months ago, although Darren Bent’s arrival has done much to placate the wideman, who is thought to prefer a move to a club within commuting distance of his Hertfordshire home if he leaves.

Dalglish has also reportedly targeted Newcastle striker Andy Carroll as a replacement for Torres and is prepared to spend £30m to lure the 22-year-old to Anfield.

But Liverpool will only allow Torres to join Chelsea if they can secure the services of Nicolas Anelka and £40m in return — or a straight £50m deal.

Dalglish is also finalising the transfers of Ajax striker Luis Suarez and Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam.

Blackpool are preparing for the possibility of Adam’s exit by planning a bid for Sunderland midfielder Andy Reid.

Spurs, who have allowed ex-Wolves striker Robbie Keane to join West Ham on loan, also want Everton’s Phil Neville.

Tuncay looks to be on his way out of Stoke, with Wolfsburg offering £4m for him.

Birmingham hope to sign ex-Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins on loan.

Out-of-favour Villa midfielder Stephen Ireland is expected to join Newcastle.

Liverpool left-back Paul Konchesky is set to join Nottingham Forest on loan.
