Steve Sidwell edges close to Villa exit
Tuesday 4th January 2011, 11:35AM GMT.
Steve Sidwell today edged further towards finalising his Villa exit after passing a medical at Premier League rivals West Ham.
The midfielder has also agreed personal terms with the Upton Park club, but has yet to put pen to paper on a deal.
Hammers boss Avram Grant is looking to strengthen his midfield department and had the Sidwell deal lined up before the opening of the transfer window on Saturday.
The 28-year-old has made just 37 starts for Villa since arriving in the summer of 2008 and his chances of playing have diminished further with the return from injury of Stiliyan Petrov and Nigel Reo-Coker.
His contract runs out at the end of the season and Villa are looking to cash in now, even if they will get nowhere near the £5.5million they paid Chelsea for him.
But Villa have been boosted with the news Gabby Agbonlahor has been passed fit for tomorrow’s game with Sunderland at Villa Park.
Agbonlahor was substituted during Sunday’s thrilling 3-3 draw at Chelsea with a groin injury, but the striker has been declared fit to face the Black Cats.
Villa could also follow up their interest in Tottenham full-back Kyle Walker, after it emerged defender Luke Young is set for a spell on the sidelines.
Manager Gerard Houllier confirmed the right-back will need to see a specialist over his ongoing injury problems.
