Richard Dunne admitted Villa's Carling Cup exit at the hands of bitter rivals Birmingham is the "lowest point" of the current campaign.

The 31-year-old defender gave Blues the ideal start in the match after a clumsy challenge on Lee Bowyer inside the penalty area. Gabby Agbonlahor equalised for Villa before Nikola

Zigic netted the winner after Dunne had failed to cut out a cross from Cameron Jerome in the build-up to the goal.

"Everyone is really low and disappointed. We have to go away now and try to pick ourselves up for Monday," Dunne said. "Hopefully this is the lowest point of our season and from here we can turn it around. Things have to change because we can't just keep saying we're unlucky. We have to go out and put in performances on the pitch where whether we are lucky or not, we have to win games.

"The position that we are in looks bad and we're close to the relegation zone but we're only three or four points off the top five or six, so the season is still wide open for us but we can't keep waiting for it.

"We have dropped off in the league and we have gone out in the cup to our local rivals so for us it has been a very disappointing season so far."

Dunne also admitted he had no complaints with referee Chris Foy with the penalty given against him which was converted by Sebastian Larsson.

He added: "It was a penalty. He got in front of us and it was a crowded box. I don't think there was much contact. It was always going to be given.

"We had an awful lot of possession in the second half. We felt really confident, we felt we were playing more in their half than our own but then we conceded the goal with the lucky deflection.

"We're just not getting the rub of the green at the moment. We're playing quite well but not getting the result."

"Coming here and getting beaten it's disappointing against your local rivals but I think we can walk away and say we gave it a good go and played as well as we have done for a couple of weeks and hopefully things will turn around."
