Villa’s secret spy for Burnley cup tie
Wednesday 27th October 2010, 10:29AM BST.
Villa have been getting the Lancashire lowdown from an unlikely spy ahead of their Carling Cup clash against Burnley – Bolton and England forward Kevin Davies.
Claret and blue defender Stephen Warnock spoke to the Trotters hitman about their local rivals, who knocked Wanderers out of the competition in the previous round, while they were on international duty together earlier this month.
And, according to Davies, Villa can expect a tough ride at home tonight.
Warnock said: “I was talking to Kevin about it while we were away on international duty. He told me they played some really good football and that they were a really good team on the night.
“We know it’s going to be a difficult game. They have some good players, people who can win games. I’ve seen them a few times and they are a good side.
“They are hoping to get back into the Premier League and they still have players who are capable of playing at the top level. We know they will be a good standard.”
Warnock admits the disappointment of losing out to Manchester United in last season’s final is driving Villa’s players on in their bid for cup glory this term.
He said: “The League Cup is very important. It was a great experience to play in the final last season. Now we know what it’s like to be beaten in a final and we want to go back there and win.
“It’s a chance to win some silverware. You want to look back on your career and think you have won something.
“But this is a difficult competition. If you look at the winners over the past few years, they have all been top clubs, which shows how much it means.
“We feel the same so it would be nice to go on and do well.”
