Spurs boss on Villa star ‘tap up’ talk
Monday 25th October 2010, 9:29AM BST.
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has laughed off any suggestion his club may have tapped up Villa winger Ashley Young.
Villa boss Gerard Houllier has refused to rule out the possibility Young has been the subject of an illegal approach by a rival club, following the England international’s U-turn over contract talks.
Redknapp is a confirmed admirer of Young, having tried to sign the 25-year-old more than once.
But the Spurs manager insists his club have had no contact with the player, even making light of the talk.
With tongue firmly in cheek, Redknapp said: “I’m tapping him up – I’ve been round his house a couple of times. We’ve done the deal, he’s OK.”
Adamant Tottenham had “never” made an illegal approach for Young, Redknapp also indicated his interest in the player is at an end.
He said: “We’ve got Gareth Bale, so what would I do with Young?
“I can’t get Niko Kranjcar on the pitch; he’s a fantastic player.
“What am I going to do with another left winger, give myself another headache?”
