Promotion is the No.1 target for Gill's aces

High-flying Wednesfield maintained their stunning run as they thrashed Wyrley 8-1 to record their 17th league win on the bounce.

A brace from Keith Thomas, Luke Yates and Scott Sandland, alongside a goal a piece from skipper Josh Jones and Kieran Whittaker, earned the Black Country outfit victory and cemented their place in second position in the West Midlands Regional League Division One.

Boss Dean Gill was delighted with the victory at Long Lane, saying: "It was a proper professional performance. Once we were two or three up, it would have been easy to take the foot off the gas but we didn't do that.

"It was a good win. We drew with them earlier on in the season so we just knew we had to get at them, we were upset we didn't get a win at our place."

The victory comes ahead of their Division One League Cup semi-final clash against Bromyard Town on Saturday.

Wednesfield are also in the final of the Birmingham Saturday Vase and the semi-final of the JW Hunt Cup.

But despite the 'amazing season' Wednesfield are having, Gill said the club's only objective is to win promotion to the Premier, and anything added on top is a bonus.

"It has been an amazing season for us," he said. "We have made it to the Birmingham Vase final, which is history for Wednesfield.

"But we only have one objective, and that is promotion."

Wednesfield are also the league's second highest scorers and have netted 100 goals in total this season.

They have also scored at least seven goals against teams in the league on four different occasions during this campaign.

The previous Saturday they beat FC Stafford 7-2 and have also beaten Newport Town 8-1 and St Martins 7-1.

Wednesfield's current position would see them achieve promotion to the top flight.

But is Gill confident his team can make the cut?

"One hundred per cent," he said. "We have got five games left and we are looking at five wins."

Gill also paid tribute to the set up at the club.

"The average age of our team is between 19 and 20, and 80 per cent of our first team are Wednesfield lads," he said. "It is a good story for Wednesfield football.

"We also have no budget and are competing with teams who do have budgets."

He also said there is a good partnership between Wednesfield's under-18s youth set-up, who are close to winning their floodlit league.

In the Premier Division, Dudley Sports kept their survival hopes alive after drawing 2-2 at home to Shifnal Town.

The result lifted Sports out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

After the game, @DudleySportsFC tweeted: "A good result considering we had 10 men for 78 minutes. One point closer to safety."

And their next two games sees them pitted against fellow lower-league opposition.

On Saturday, they entertain Wellington Amateurs, who are second from bottom, before travelling to Dudley Town the week after.

Second-placed Wolverhampton Sporting Community battled their way to a 1-0 success against Bilston Town Community.

Sporting will be chasing another three points when they travel to Bewdley Town tonight.

Cradley Town moved up to seventh on the back of a 2-1 at Black Country Rangers.

Wolverhampton Casuals, who tackle rock-bottom Gornal Athletic tonight, beat Dudley Town 5-2 at the weekend, while Gornal Athletic drew 1-1 with Stone Old Alleynians. Bewdley Town, meanwhile, were 4-0 winners against Wellington Amateurs.

Tonight's other action sees Black Country Rangers host champions Haughmond.
