The 21-year-old Staffordshire swimmer won Britain's first gold at the Rio Olympics in the summer, sparking an incredible medal haul for Team GB.

The breaststroke star is joined by Wolverhampton University honorary graduate Dame Sarah Storey, who became Britain's most decorated Paralympian in history in Rio.

However, both Midlands hopes will be big outsiders with world tennis number one and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray a massive favourite to win for an unprecedented third time.

Only three non-Olympians or Paralympians have been nominated – footballers Gareth Bale and Jamie Vardy, and Masters golf champion Danny Willett.

Among the omissions are Tour de France winner Chris Froome and IBF world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
