Martin Gethin took the fight in Morrisons!

Walsall's Martin Gethin was doing the weekly shop at Morrisons when he was offered the tasty test of tomorrow's fight night.

He's the fresh choice to take on John Wayne Hibbert live on Sky Sports at the Wembley Arena in London after Tommy Coyle pulled out, writes Craig Birch.

The two will clash for the IBF Inter-Continental super lightweight title, which the winner must immediately vacate so the belt can be contested again.

Gethin already holds a world ranking with the organisation, having won their International honours and taking part in a final eliminator for the full crown.

The former Midlands, English and British lightweight champion has been drafted in at late notice and boxed last Saturday, unaware of what was to come.

The 33-year-old was contemplating retirement when manager Errol Johnson called him when he was out and about in Aldridge with wife Sherilyn and their two children, Kane and Kadi.

He said: "I was actually heading to the toilet! I saw I had a couple of missed calls from Errol. I rang him back and he asked if I fancied it.

"I've had my next fight come around quick, but nothing like this before. That's boxing, sometimes a chance comes up and you have to take it.

"I'm not going to make up the numbers, though, I'm after the win. With one result, I can start getting back up there.

"If I lose, there's probably nowhere else for me to go at a higher level and it would daft to keep carrying on and getting beat.

"I've got this because I'm a name, but that can diminish if I don't go out there and perform. The last thing I want to do is end up rooting around at the bottom of the ladder.

"There's always something to lose, even if you are not expected to win. Sometimes you just have to take the risk.

"I lost three fights in a row earlier in my career and still went on to win the British title. Things can change very quickly."

Gethin was unwittingly assisted by having a trouble-free outing at Walsall Town Hall last weekend, sailing to a four-round points whitewash over Liam Richards.

'The Quiet Man' had previously stated he wanted one more bout on his own turf, but it ended up serving another purpose.

He said: "It blew the cobwebs off. I barely got hit, he clobbered me around the side of the head once and I had a bit of a bruise on my collarbone, that was about it. I felt good afterwards.

"I was actually worried about getting cut, because he kept coming in with his head low, but I managed to keep away from him.

"Obviously, I haven't had that much time to train for this one, but I've done my sprints and hill runs outside along with fast pads and shadow boxing in the gym.

"There's no point in killing myself at this sort of notice. I'll either be fit enough to last or I won't, but I've got a good engine anyway."

Hibbert, on preparation alone, will be the favourite and is determined to get back to winning ways after a stoppage loss to Andrea Scarpa in July.

The banger from Essex, 31, has either blown away his opponent or gone himself by TKO in his last nine bouts.

Gethin is prepared for a war, adding: "I've got to take the fight to him and it wouldn't surprise me if he tries to take my head off early on.

"I know I can hold a shot, but I'm not sure he can. He's coming off the back of a loss. We'll see what happens on the night."

Tickets for the show are still available priced at £40, £60 and £100 from www.ssearena.co.uk or by calling 0844 338 8000.

VIP passes, costing £150, are exclusively available at www.matchroomboxing.com or on 01277 359 900.
