Wolves take their 18-point advantage to the National Speedway Stadium tomorrow, knowing they are on the cusp of their first Elite League title since 2009. All seven riders contributed to the result, with Thorssell winning the final two heats to slam home Wolves' advantage.

"It's good we won by a lot of points and I think we can keep this together (in the second leg)," said the Swede. "It's very good, but we are only halfway through and there are still 15 heats to go – it will be a tough meeting on Wednesday."

And Thorssell – who has been with the Monmore outfit since 2012 – reflected on their huge turnaround in fortunes having finished just one of the bottom of the table 12 months ago.

"It's amazing," he said. "Every year I've been here we've been struggling, so it's good to give back to CVS (promoter Chris van Straaten), Peter (Adams, team manager) and all the fans."
