Walsall have appealed the red card shown to Joe Edwards during Saturday's clash with Bolton.

The 25-year-old was sent off for what referee Trevor Kettle deemed to be an elbow on Chris Taylor after the two players battled to win the ball in the air.

Edwards was giving his marching orders in the 16th minute. However, Jon Whitney's side still managed to go on and win the game thanks to a Jason McCarthy goal.

Walsall have appealed the sending off on the grounds Edwards showed no intent to hurt his opponent.

Joe Edwards is shown the red card

If the appeal is rejected, the former Yeovil man will face a three game ban that will see him miss the League One clashes with Peterborough, Scunthorpe and Millwall.

A Walsall statement said: "The club have today lodged an appeal against Joe Edward's red card received during the first half of Saturday's 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers.

"Edwards was handed an immediate three match ban for serious foul play which could see him miss our Sky Bet League One fixtures with Peterborough United, Scunthorpe United and Millwall.

"However, the club have appealed the decision and await an outcome from the Football Association which should be received ahead of Saturday's trip to London Road.

"Supporters will be updated in due course."
