Rio Olympics 2016: Lichfield's Emily Scarratt confident as Team GB's rugby side reach quarter-finals

Emily Scarratt crossed for a double as Team GB cruised into Sunday night's Olympic quarter-finals and the captain insists her side are starting to hit top gear in time for the medal rounds.

Simon Middleton's side beat Canada 22-0 on Sunday afternoon to top Pool C with a perfect record of three wins from three – with zero tries conceded.

Amy Richardson bagged the first before Amy Wilson Hardy extended Team GB's lead before half time.

And in the second stanza it was Scarratt – who won the World Cup with England in the XV-a-side game two years ago – who led from the front with two tries to secure a comfortable victory.

That sets up a quarter-final at 10pm UK time with Fiji and Scarratt is feeling confident.

"We are really pleased with that performance, yesterday parts of our game were not exactly where we wanted them to be but this morning we came out firing," she said.

"Canada are one of the best teams in the world and we managed to squeeze their skills and really come out on top so it's really pleasing.

"It's key to top the group, Sevens is all about momentum,. It's all about consistency of performance and we really want to harness that performance and take it on this afternoon to the quarter-final – that will be vital for us.

"It doesn't happen very often that I get on the scoresheet so it's nice.

"But it was a product of all the girls' amazing hard work in defence that we are able to collect loose balls and pick up tries like that."

Victory over Fiji in this evening's quarter-final would guarantee Team GB a medal match at Rio 2016 as Sevens makes its Olympic debut.

And while the Pacific Islanders were eighth in this year's World Sevens Series to England's fourth, Scarratt insists she and her teammates are taking nothing for granted.

"Fiji are a great side – they are similar to the men in that they will throw the ball around and at times you find yourself chasing shadows because they keep the ball alive so very well," she added.

"But we will rest up now, do our homework and come back firing this afternoon."
