Heathens ready for tapes to go up

Returning Cradley star Luke Chessell believes he has a point to prove – starting in their season opener against Belle Vue's junior side at Monmore Green tonight (7.30 pm).

The 26-year-old first appeared for the former Dudley Wood club in 2011 in what was only the second season of his career.

Reflecting six years on, the Wiltshire-born racer admits it was a step too far too soon but is now determined to make the most of a second opportunity.

Chessell said: "When I first raced for the Heathens, I probably should have waited another year before making the jump to the National League but it was definitely a big learning curve for me.

"Having said that, the Heathens fans were brilliant as always and they always tried to encourage me and keep my head held high.

"Every year since, I've been badgering them for another chance but this year they got in touch with me, I fitted into their equation and I can't wait to get stuck in for such a big club.

"I've picked up so much experience at this level over the past couple of years and I really want to push on this year.

"Towards the end of last season, I had some doubts about continuing in the sport, but I went away over the winter, fell in love with speedway again and I'm totally refocused and have got a brand new mindset for 2016.

"My main objective this year is to prove that I have come on as a rider, that I deserved another chance and more than anything I want to score some big points for the team.

"We've got a solid looking side this year and we want to win the all-important trophies back.

"Belle Vue will be a good early test for us as a team but there's no reason why we can't go out there and put in a big performance."

The club will launch their new-look, 48-page bumper raceday programme for just £3 at the track.

Admission is £12 adults, £9 concessions/students, £3 children 6-17 while kids aged five and under go free.
