In a charity-supported 'World Squad', the Lashings side travel all across the United Kingdom taking on local clubs and providing entertainment for keen fans.

And West Indies international Best, who turned 34 on Wednesday and still plays first class cricket for Barbados, admitted he was certainly made to feel welcomed in England.

He said: "It's most definitely a nice place to spend my birthday.

"I love England. I love the people. They're my people and always very warm and welcoming.

"I will go home at the end of the weekend and prepare for my first class games in November and I'll give it one more crack at trying to get into the West Indies team.

The fast bowler is well-known for being involved in one of the most famous sledging incidents of all time, as Andrew Flintoff told him to 'mind the windows' at Lord's when the West Indies toured England in 2004 and Best attempted to slog spinner Ashley Giles – then was stumped next ball.

"Freddie will always say it's 1-1. I sledged him in Trinidad and he got me back at Lord's!" Best said.

"We're good mates – I've got a book coming out called 'Mind the Windows'."

He added: "I love the atmosphere. Sometimes cricket isn't all about the hardcore stuff. It's a gentleman's game and I can be a gentleman!

"The people are really excited to finally meet the Lashings guys. It's a better option for fans than going to Lord's or Edgbaston.

"The supporters' energy is awesome. I've been here for a few months and the energy at every single village we've been to is incredible.

"I was very happy for English cricket. I was disappointed my boy Kevin Pietersen can't get a place but I'm happy for Rooty and when Bairstow came back in the team."

Lashings won by 24 runs, with Wassim Jaffer smashing 95 not out.
