Benik Afobe struck late to earn Wolves a deserved draw in an end-to-end West Midlands derby against Aston Villa at Molineux.

A lively game, played out in front of a large and boisterous crowd, saw Villa twice take the lead through Libor Kozak, but dogged Wolves refused to lie down in a chance-laden encounter.

Boss Kenny Jackett sprang a surprise with his line-up, plumping for David Edwards on the left of midfield in a 4-4-2 formation and leaving Rajiv Van La Parra and Tommy Rowe on the bench.

Kick off was delayed slightly by the sheer number of fans making their way into the ground in what was a bumper crowd for a friendly.

But the delay didn't bother Villa - they came racing out of the blocks with sluggish Wolves struggling to get hold of the ball in the opening stages.

They took an early lead in spectacular fashion when Kozak took Alan Hutton's pass - via a Gabby Agbonlahor dummy - and fired an unstoppable 25-yarder past Ikeme.

The 5,000 or so Villa fans in attendance went wild - and just six minutes later they were nearly celebrating again.

Kozak took advantage of a Richard Stearman slip, before clipping off the bar from eight yards out.

Struggling Wolves were all over the place at the back and Villa should have punished them yet again seconds later, but the lively Kozak sent a free header past the post with the goal at his mercy.

WOLVES: Ikeme, Iorfa, Stearman, Hause, Golbourne, Henry, McDonald, Coady, Edwards, Afobe, Dicko.

Gradually Wolves, with the home fans growing restless at an alarmingly messy opening from their team, found their feet.

Benik Afobe, who increasingly came deep to link up play, fed James Henry whose left-footed effort bobbled wide.

Afobe was again involved when he cleverly worked some space in the Villa box and then teed up Iorfa, who took aim from 12 yards but saw his powerful shot deflect past the post.

Wolves were much better in possession but Villa continued to threaten on the counter attack.

Scott Sinclair and Agbonlahor too easily found space in behind Kevin McDonald and Conor Coady and, on more than one occasion, a decent through ball would have seen Wolves cut open.

Coady, keen to make a big impression on his Molineux bow, did just that with some tenacious tackling and positive passing.

His dangerous cross was expertly headed behind by Richards as Wolves showed further improvement.

Shortly after half time two tenacious challenges from Coady suddenly led to Dicko racing towards the box, but Ciaran Clark intercepted just as the striker was about to shoot.

That got the home fans going and a minute later Molineux nearly erupted when Wolves should have equalised.

Afobe dispossessed Clark near the corner flag and crossed to Dicko, but his disappointing effort was easy for goalkeeper Mark Bunn.

Wolves' pressure finally told when superb work from Dominic Iorfa set up a deserved equaliser - he skipped past Sinclair and crossed low for Edwards whose cheeky flick beat Bunn at the near post.

However Wolves' good work was almost immediately undone when Callum Robinson's scuffed shot was tapped home by Kozak for his second of the game just a minute later.

Wolves, for whom every man played the full 90 minutes, pushed hard for another equaliser but Dicko and Edwards both shot wide from decent positions and Villa looked set for the win.

But Afobe had the last laugh, taking Dicko's perfect pass and coolly slotting past Bunn to send the home fans home happy.
