Defecting to the enemy? Five transfers between title rivals

Premier League champions Chelsea are set to sell their goalkeeper Petr Cech to title rivals Arsenal, with captain John Terry claiming they would be getting 12-15 points a season.

With the Czech International's move across London is set to be finalised this week, Jamie Brassington looks at five other top teams that have sold star players to one of their biggest rivals.

1. Luis Figo - Barcelona to Real Madrid, 2000

Luis Figo's record-breaking transfer from fierce rivals Barcelona shocked the footballing world and began the 'Galactico' era at Real Madrid.

In his first season in a white Madrid shirt, Figo won the Ballon d'Or, mainly for his efforts in a Barcelona shirt, and won the 2000/1 La Liga title, scoring 14 goals.

On his first return to Barcelona for the El Classico derby, he was met by a packed jeering Camp Nou where banners littered the stadium with words like 'Traitor', 'Judas', 'Scum' and 'Mercenary.'

2. Carlos Tevez - Premier League winners Manchester United to Manchester City, 2009

Argentinian striker Tevez cross the Manchester divide in July 2009 for a fee reported to be a British transfer record of £47 million.

He went on to make more than 100 appearances for City and netted 74 goals in all competitions.

He became drawn into the centre of the rivalry between the two Manchester Clubs, memorably scoring three goals over two semi final legs in the 2010 League Cup against his ex employers.

3 Eric Cantona - From First Division winners Leeds United to Manchester United, 1992.

Cantona signed in November 1992, for a fee of £1.2million and became the first player in English football to win back-to-back top-flight titles with different clubs, where he won the Premier League with Manchester United that season.

4. Andy Cole - Newcastle to Manchester United, 1995

Andy Cole was sold to Manchester United half through the 1994/95 footballing season in a shock move, which set a then British record transfer fee of £7million.

He had finished the previous season with Newcastle third in the Premier League.

Cole still managed to score 12 goals in 18 appearances during his first seaon in Manchester, including an astonishing five in United's 9–0 rout of Ipswich Town, becoming the first player to score five goals in a Premier League game.

5. Sol Campbell - Tottenham Hotspur to Arsenal, 2001

England international Campbell was a firm favourite at White Hart Lane and his move to arch North London rivals sent shockwaves through north London – including effigies of the defender being hanged from lampposts.

Campbell, inset left, went on to be a huge part of the Gunners' Invincibles team of the 2003-2004 season.

He has since apologised to fans for the pain caused by the move, but not for the move itself.
