Five who saw red for the most bizarre of reasons

After former West Brom defender Gonzalo Jara triggered a bizarre red card in the Copa America, Steve Madeley looks at that sending off along with four more of football's more bizarre dismissals of recent years.

1 Edinson Cavani – Uruguay (v Chile, 2015)

The Paris Saint Germain striker receives his marching orders after former Albion defender Gozalo Jara reacts theatrically to a hand in the face, which came in retaliation for a bizarre clash in which the Chile man appeared to stick a finger up his opponent's backside.

The officials miss Jara's part in the incident and order Cavani back to the dressing room to the disgust of the rest of the Uruguay team, who go on to lose their Copa America clash.

2 Kevin Pressman – Sheffield Wednesday (v Wolves, 2000)

Wolves v Sheffield Wednesday, one the quickest red cards ever for Wednesday keeper Kevin Pressman following his handball offence after 13 seconds of the game. The grounded Temuri Ketspaia appeals for the free kick.

Owls keeper Pressman, who was previously best known at Molineux for scoring a penalty in a famous shootout, fell victim to one of the fastest red cards in English football history.

He was sent off just 13 seconds into the Owls' 1-1 draw at Wolves when he was judged to have deliberately handled the ball outside his area.

Substitute keeper Chris Stringer took over in goal,Temuri Ketsbaia put Wolves 1-0 up but Andy Booth earned Wednesday a draw.

3 Cesc Fabregas – Chelsea (v Albion, 2015)

The Blues midfielder is not known for courting controversy, but he received one of the oddest red cards anyone at The Hawthorns had seen in years in Albion's final home game of last season.

After Gareth McAuley had clashed with Diego Costa and a melee had ensued, Fabregas booted a ball from 20 yards away that flew into the crowd and hit former Baggies captain Chris Brunt on the side of the head, leading to an instant dismissal.

4 Andre Bikey – Cameroon (v Ghana, 2008)

The defender, who had spells at Charlton, Reading, Burnley and Middlesbrough, was sent off in an Africa Cup of Nations semi-final for pushing over a Ghanaian stretcher-bearer just seconds before Cameroon were due to qualify.

The medical team entered the field to treat an injured Rigobert Song but Bikey reacted by pushing stretcher-bearer Samuel Ashia and sending him tumbling.

5 Shabir Khan – Worcester City (v Stockport, 2015)

As retaliation goes, Worcester defender Khan's reaction to a poor challenge by Stockport midfielder Charlie Russell was pretty spectacular.

Kahn appeared to body slam his opponent in their Conference North match at Aggborough, where Worcester ground share with the Kidderminster Harriers.

Russell had chased Khan on the right touchline and caught the full-back with a high challenge.

The Worcester player then got up, before picking up Russell and slamming him to the ground.
