It's Saido in and Afobe out of England U21s

Albion striker Saido Berahino has been named in England's squad for the Under-21 European Championships – but Wolves forward Benik Afobe has missed out.

Berahino was included by boss Gareth Southgate in the final 23-man squad for the tournament in the Czech Republic.

But Afobe was one of the players from the provisional 27-man group to miss out, after being called into the reckoning for the first time.

Berahino had been a key player in England's qualifying campaign for the finals and has been named along with Tottenham's Harry Kane and Burnley's Danny Ings in the final squad.

But Afobe, whose flying form for Wolves in the second half of the season propelled him into contention, has not been able to force his way into Southgate's final plans.

And Albion boss Tony Pulis has given his backing to Berahino, saying: "It's a brilliant achievement for him.

"I hope he goes out there and has a successful tournament because he thoroughly deserves this recognition. To be capped for your country - at any level - is a great honour and achievement.

"This is a fitting end to what was an excellent season for Saido. Since I walked through the door, he's been a good professional and improved his overall game.

"The kid has gone to a different level in respect of the effort and commitment he is putting in for the team, because it's a team game. He has been brilliant this year."

Southgate felt it necessary to explain Afobe's omission, saying: " We felt we wanted to acknowledge the season that he's had.

"Benik had been in the England system at younger age groups and had a really good season. If we had any problems, then I wouldn't hesitate to call him in.

"He’s been really enthusiastic about potential involvement and I’ve been very impressed.

"But it’s always a difficult conversation to have because you’d like to give everybody the opportunity, but you’re not able to do that."
