The West Ham forward, speaking for the first time since his transfer to The Hawthorns collapsed in the final hour of the summer transfer window, says he had a heated phonecall with Hammers boss Sam Allardyce from Albion's players' canteen.

The 31-year-old was at Albion's training ground and ready to sign for Tony Pulis's side when Allardyce called off the move because the Hammers had failed to sign a replacement.

"It was 20 minutes to the deadline," said former Wolves and Villa loanee Cole in an interview in London in his role as an ambassador for the Football Fighting Ebola.

"I was just on the table just (saying) where do I sign? It was one of those that was really frustrating.

"I am 'f-ing and blinding' in the catering room over there. And I was like 'I have to get home now'.

"I got a chance to play first-team football and as a player I was not playing regularly at West Ham.

"I'm still not. He (Allardyce) has chosen to not let me go. It was really hard at the time and we had a few words but these things carry on and you dust yourself off and carry on.

"I do like Sam a lot. He is an honest guy. He told me how it was and said 'I can't let you go as I have no got a replacement for you'.

"I said, 'ok I will come back and try my best for you'."

Cole, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has played only 169 minutes of Premier League football for West Ham since the deal was called off.

And with Allardyce's own deal set to expire this summer, leaving his future uncertain, Cole admitted he does not know where he will be next season.

"I don't think Sam knows what he is doing (about his future). He ain't going to be talking to me about my contract."
