The 31-year-old underwent reconstruction surgery on his anterior cruciate ligaments yesterday after the damage was discovered during an exploratory operation.

Foster is not expected to return to the first team until October.

Dr Mark Gillet, director of performance in Albion's sports science and medical team, said: "Ben is in good spirits despite this obvious disappointment to him – he's already talking about his 'rehab' and wanting to get started on it immediately."

Foster suffered similar damage in his right knee early in his career, but made a full recovery.

Boaz Myhill will replace Foster as goalkeeper while he is out, with the team's under 21 graduate, Jack Rose, continuing as understudy.
