Former Albion hero Jason Koumas played key role in 'selling' Baggies to Callum McManaman

Fromer Hawthorns hero Jason Koumas played a key role in 'selling' Albion to new boy Callum McManaman, he says.

Koumas spent five years at Albion between 2002 and 2007, scoring 23 times in 123 appearances. The maverick midfielder was a huge favourite among Throstles supporters - and Koumas clearly retains affection for his former club, with McManaman stating that he spoke warmly about Albion.

McManaman also spoke with former Albion men Scott Carson, Liam Ridgewell and Marc-Antoine Fortune to ensure he was making the right move.

"I spoke to a few of the lads: Scott, Liam and Marco only had good things to say. I know Leon (Barnett) was here too, although I didn't speak to him on the move.

"Another person I spoke to was Jason Koumas.

"He said some really nice things about the club - said he loved his time here, loved the fans. He really encouraged me to go for it and said it would be a good move for me.

"We go back a long way from when he was at Wigan about eight years ago. I know he's highly thought of down here by the fans so those comments meant a lot."

McManaman continued: "Jason said the Albion fans like a good, attacking player who takes players on - that's exactly the kind of player I think I am.

"I'm a direct player. I like to take players on - it's what I enjoy doing."
