Smith in the mood for a festive Saddlers special

Dean Smith is hopeful Walsall can serve up a Boxing Day cracker against Swindon Town.

The Saddlers boss is a big fan of the festive fixtures and admits he can't wait for the meeting with the Robins.

"I really enjoy the Boxing Day fixtures, the crowd always seem to be up for it and the games can be a bit special," said Smith.

"I remember my first one as manager, when we hosted Sheffield Wednesday. We won 2-1 and it was a really good occasion.

"There was just a really good atmosphere and I think it will be the same on Friday. I'm not sure what it is – I just think there is a tradition about the whole day – people going out to see a game.

"If our performance levels are where they have been in recent weeks then we stand a very good chance of getting a result."

Last year's 1-0 defeat at Bristol City was the first time Smith has tasted Boxing Day defeat since taking charge of the Saddlers almost four years ago.

He is eager to see them get back on track this year and extend their seven-game unbeaten league run.

But with Swindon currently sitting third in the table, he knows that will be no easy task.

"They (Swindon) are a team who play good football," said Smith.

"I've watched them several times and there is no question they will be a tough test for us."

Top scorer Tom Bradshaw has called on the Saddlers to make a quick start against the Robins.

Smith's men have conceded the first goal in their last three games and while they have fought back in each, Bradshaw thinks it is time they began seizing the initiative.

"That has been the pattern the past few weeks," said the 22-year-old. "We've gone behind and then responded but we shouldn't need the opposition to score to kick us on.

"It's something we need to improve on.

"At the same time, it is a positive thing that we are reacting to going a goal down and getting points."
