The 18-year-old striker had been poised to make the switch to Molineux from League Two Northampton Town after undergoing a medical, with a fee having also been agreed between both clubs.

But the deal, which had been set to be a record sale for the Cobblers, is now off.

"There is no deal going to come off today for Ivan Toney," said Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett.

"It was something that we were interested in but it's not going to happen.

"There are always a number of things involved in a transfer that have to be exactly right for all parties and it hasn't happened.

"We wish the player all the best and all parties now move on."

A statement on Northampton's website confirmed the news.

It read: "Striker Ivan Toney will not be joining Wolves.

"Northampton Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers had agreed an undisclosed club record fee for the striker but the deal will no longer proceed.

"Toney remains with Northampton Town, under contract until June 2017."

Toney, who became the Cobblers youngest ever player aged 16, has scored five goals in his last 13 appearances.

He had looked set to replace Leon Clarke but instead the latter will instead remain at Molineux.
