Wolverhampton Racecourse bosses say the track is safe after four jockeys were injured in a five-horse pile-up.

Horse Fitz Flyer was put down after suffering a serious injury in the collision on Thursday while jockey Richard Kingscote remains in hospital after suffering a punctured lung and a broken wrist, arm, elbow and collarbone.

Three other jockeys, including former champion jockey Paul Hanagan, were injured. But Susannah Gill, director of external affairs for course owners Arena Racing, said: "It wasn't a nice incident at all but unfortunately it was just one of those things that happens in racing from time to time.

"A horse clipped heels with a horse in front and that caused them to move across in front of a number of other horses, which is what caused the incident. There was no issue with the surface or anything else to do with the track, it was just an unfortunate incident."
