Golbourne assured he still has big role at Wolves

Kenny Jackett has praised 'model pro' Scott Golbourne as he assured the axed left-back he will play a major role for Wolves this season.

Fans have been shocked and surprised at Golbourne's absence for Tommy Rowe in the last three games at the same time Ethan Ebanks-Landell replaced Richard Stearman in the heart of the defence.

The 26-year-old had emerged as one of the most consistent players since his £700,000 arrival from Barnsley in August 2013. Jackett said: "Scott has done very well but I felt the left side of our defence has perhaps given away too many goals and I decided to make those changes.

"But Scott still has a big future with us and, while the combinations of players are always being looked at, he has to keep working hard, remain professional and be ready for when his chance comes again – because it will come."

Jackett insists there is no issue with Golbourne, adding: "There's been no problem with him whatsoever, he's one of the best professionals you could wish to meet.

"He puts 100 per cent in to every single training session and is very fit, very committed and a low maintenance player.

"He'll play a really big part in what we're aiming for – a successful season. I can't be critical of Scott, he's unlucky to be out of the side.

"When he comes back, he'll continue to do a very good job and he'll be a very strong player for Wolves, as he has so far."

Jackett admits it's a tight call between Golbourne and Rowe for the left-back spot.

"We've got two very good left-backs. Rowe is perhaps slightly better in the air but Golbourne is very efficient down that side and has been a very good player," he added.

"Golbourne has had quite a long time to bed in and Rowe is early on in his Wolves career.

"I'm sure Scott's got the character and the quality to respond to it very well.

"They have slightly varying strengths, and if you can get two good players for one slot then the club is in very good hands."
