Irvine: £15m not enough for Saido

Albion boss Alan Irvine is warning transfer vultures that £15m is not be enough to land Hawthorns hotshot Saido Berahino.

Irvine believes it would take a much bigger bid to prise the England Under-21s star away from the Baggies after his flying start to the season.

Berahino's six goals for Albion and three for Gareth Southgate's Under-21s have prompted media rumours of interest from Tottenham, with £15m mooted a possible price.

But Irvine said: "That doesn't sound a lot.

"I would be absolutely astonished if anyone could sign Saido from us for £15m.

"If you look at some of the fees going around in the transfer market that's just gone, everybody seemed to start the bidding at £7m.

"Ross McCormack went for £11m Championship to Championship (Leeds to Fulham).

"What's the right figure I have absolutely no idea, and I wouldn't make the decision as far as that was concerned.

"But £15m doesn't sound like a lot of money for a talented, young, English player with great potential who is playing really, really well in the Premier League at the moment and who is scoring goals. It would have to be higher."

Irvine revealed he spoke to rival managers in the summer to warn them off Albion players, with in-form defender Craig Dawson pursued throughout the summer by Burnley.

The Baggies boss insisted he would do so again over Berahino.

But he admitted bigger clubs are bound to be monitoring his progress.

"It's not my place to say, but if I got that kind of call from a manager I would probably try to find out some kind of ideas from the chairman and board about whether people were wasting their time," he said.

"I don't think we are anywhere near that point at this moment."

"I think somebody has written a story because Saido was a handful against Tottenham, and if he is a handful against Manchester United on Monday they will probably write that story as well.

"But if I was working at any of the top Premier League clubs I would probably be saying 'we'd better have a look and see what this young lad is doing at West Brom, because he seems to be scoring a load of goals'.

"That certainly doesn't mean we need to sell."
