West Brom winger Silvestre Varela has had surgery to cure a groin problem – but the Portugal international should be back in training next week.

The on-loan wideman travelled to Germany for an operation on the injury that has kept him out in recent weeks.

Despite undergoing the minor procedure the 29-year-old, who has made just one substitute appearance for the Baggies in the Capital One Cup, is not expecting a long-term lay-off.

Albion have been in discussions with Porto – Varela's parent club.

Head coach Alan Irvine said: "Silvestre has had a minor groin operation in Munich.

"Porto are happy and comfortable with it.

"We hope Silvestre will join us for training sometime next week."
