Villa missed out on a deal for Spanish midfielder Sergio Canales as Radamel Falcao's big-money loan move to Manchester United dominated deadline day.

United splashed out a reported £24m in wages and fees to sign Colombia international Falcao on loan for a year from AS Monaco while Danny Welbeck looked set to leave Old Trafford for Arsenal in a £16m transfer.

But Villa failed to complete a deal to sign 23-year-old Canales from Real Sociedad after the player rejected the switch to Villa Park.

Boss Paul Lambert had earlier agreed to sell midfielder Karim El Ahmadi back to his former club, Feyenoord, and lined up a move for Canales – an attacking midfielder and former Spain Under-21s international.

But the player was not keen on the move, meaning Villa ended deadline day with no new additions to Lambert's squad.

Villa also dropped out of the race for Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, who seemed poised to also reject a switch to Everton.

Falcao's switch to Old Trafford will reportedly see the Monaco man pick up £346,000-per-week in wages with United also shelling out a £6m loan fee.

United also confirmed their £13.8m deal to sign versatile Netherlands international Daley Blind from Ajax – following their British record deal to recruit Angel Di Maria from AC Milan last week.

Old Trafford officials were rushing to complete the formalities of Falcao's loan last night after he flew in yesterday afternoon for a medical and to finalise personal terms.

And Arsenal were hoping to force through the signing of England international Welbeck after agreeing a fee for the striker with United.

Midfielder George Boyd moved from Hull to Burnley, Chelsea loaned Marco van Ginkel to AC Milan and Tottenham paid Montpellier £4.7m for midfielder Benjamin Stambouli.

Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates joined Sunderland on a season-long loan.

Hull were busy with boss Steve Bruce signing midfielder Mohamed Diame from West Ham for an undisclosed fee and breaking the Tigers' transfer record with a £10m deal for midfielder Adel Hernandez from Palermo. He also signed Southampton midfielder Gaston Ramirez on loan.

QPR signed midfielder Sandro from Tottenham but were unable to bag Jermain Defoe from Toronto.

Former Albion loanee Morgan Amalfitano moved to West Ham for £1m.
