Saddlers' Smith crying foul over Yeovil winner

Dean Smith was left crying foul after claiming AJ Leitch-Smith handled the ball for Yeovil's winner at Walsall last night.

The Glovers claimed a 2-1 victory at the Banks's Stadium when former Crewe hitman Leitch-Smith appeared to turn in Kevin Dawson's shot on the line 17 minutes from time.

Smith felt the striker had used his hand to deflect the shot, though Yeovil boss Gary Johnson claimed the ball was already over the line and officially the goal was awarded to Dawson.

But Smith said: "If somebody punches it in, there is not much you can do about it.

"It was frustrating. We should have been three goals to the good in the first half but we didn't take our chances.

"Then we started the second half OK but lost our way after they scored the second, which their lad has punched in on the line."

Ashley Grimes and Romaine Sawyers were both guilty of bad misses as the Saddlers failed to take their chances in the first half.

James Hayter then headed the Glovers in front 10 minutes into the second period and though Tom Bradshaw levelled for the Saddlers, Dawson – or Leitch-Smith – restored the visitors' advantage within 60 seconds.

Smith, who reiterated after the game his desire to bring in another striker, was also left fuming by referee Jeremy Simpson's decision not to award a penalty when substitute Amadou Bakayoko appeared to be pushed over in the box as the Saddlers hunted a late leveller.

"You might say we didn't create chances but we put a great ball in and Bakayoko has been fouled – it is a blatant penalty," he said.

"If we score a goal from that it is 2-2 and we are talking about a different game. We are not as they have scored a goal which was punched in."
