Wrangle hits Villa's hopes of signing

Villa's move for Elche midfielder Carlos Sanchez was still in the balance today.

The 28-year-old defensive midfielder - nicknamed The Rock - was today due into the Second City to sign a four-year deal.

However, a third-party ownership wrangle has complicated the deal and Villa were today assessing their options.

The Colombia international had been identified by Villa boss Paul Lambert as the man he wants to add some bite to his midfield.

And, if this last-minute hitch can be sorted out, the Villa boss looks to have secured Sanchez's capture ahead of the Premier League opener against Stoke on Saturday.

If the ownership issue can be overcome todya, Sanchez will undergo his medical at Bodymoor Heath, with the club hopeful of completing the deal soon after.

No work permit issues are expected, given his 48 caps for Colombia including all four games at the World Cup in Brazil.

Sanchez spent the majority of his career playing in France, spending seven years with Valenciennes before moving to Spain in 2013.

He then made 30 La Liga appearances for Elche.
