The Saddlers have used no fewer than four on-loan goalkeepers following the manager's decision to axe the under-performing David Grof last November.

Karl Darlow from Nottingham Forest, Ian McLoughlin from Milton Keynes Dons and Wolves' Aaron McCarey have all had spells between the sticks, while latest custodian Sam Johnstone returns to Manchester United after today's season finale at Crewe. Smith revealed he has already drawn up a shortlist as he bids to bring a new permanent keeper to the Banks's Stadium.

He said: "I've got a list of about a dozen names so far. The goalkeeping situation has been a strange one this season. We have had a number of keepers come in and the have all done well."

Johnstone, who had a spell on loan at Scunthorpe last season, today made his seventh appearance for the Saddlers and said: "I have really enjoyed it here – it is seven games under my belt, all valuable experience."
