Wolves boss Saunders won't consider drop
Bullish Wolves boss Dean Saunders today insisted he isn’t thinking about relegation or the financial mess it would leave the club in.
Wolves could sink to the bottom of the Championship tonight if they lose at Millwall and Bristol City beat Brighton at home.
Saunders, however, is convinced Wolves are edging closer to their first victory after 13 games without a win.
And the ever-optimistic Molineux chief believes they can avoid the huge financial headache a second successive relegation would dump the club in.
The players’ annual wage bill is £25m and there are no plans for salary cuts after players took a drop of between 15 to 50 per cent when they fell out of the Premier League.
“I’m not even thinking about getting relegated,” said Saunders.
“I’m thinking about us winning three games on the trot, then the league table will look completely different.”
As for the players’ futures, Saunders said: “I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.
“I’d rather motivate the players into looking upw-ards than thinking about threatening them about what could happen going the other way.
“I’m saying to them ‘come on, if we do well now, then next season, we’re going to go for promotion.
“And if we do well next season, their money will go the other way.
“All I’m trying to do is motivate the players to win some games. I think they know for their own careers how important it is.”
Millwall, who have their FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday at home to Blackburn, are in worse league form than Wolves, with six defeats in their last eight league games.
“They’re still in the FA Cup which can drag your form along or affect your form badly,” said Saunders.
“Hopefully it has affected their league form badly because if we beat them, we’re five points behind them.”
Meanwhile, Saunders today insisted Wolves are making progress and are edging closer to their first victory since he took charge.
Second-from-bottom Wolves go to Millwall tonight seeking their first win in 14 games, having gone from 18th, nine points from the play-offs and six points from the drop zone when he was appointed, to 23rd and a point below the safety line now.
Boss Saunders believes the improved second half against Cardiff and the late comeback draws against Leeds and in-form Watford prove Wolves are starting to turn the corner.
“I actually feel like we’re making progress, believe it or not,” said Saunders. “I know people get fed up of me saying positive things but I actually do.
“We did it against Watford, Leeds and Cardiff, when Sylvan would have made it 2-2 if he’d scored that chance at the end.
“So they’re fighting until the end with the belief they’ve got from scoring.
“And scoring in the 93rd minute is a major boost because you’re never dead and you know you can score late on – we’ve done it twice now.
“When you look at our performances, the games could have gone either way. I’m not telling the players lies when I say they’re capable of winning these matches.
“In the last two, they’ve shown that against the best teams in the league because there has been nothing in it.
“So there’s no reason why we can’t win four or five games.”
Asked what gives him the belief, Saunders said: “I look at what we’ve got and who we’re playing against and we just need luck.
“We’ve had two penalties given against us and we’ve missed chances – Leicester away, Blackpool here, Cardiff last week and the referee didn’t give us a penalty with the last kick of the game the other night.”
Saunders warned Wolves will have to show their appetite for a battle to get anything from Millwall. “It’s going to be a tough game – they’re a hardworking team and they battle for every point,” he said.

please bring back Stale Solbakken!! Dean Saunders please leave us!!
Jake
Stick with Dean thanks. At least we have everyone turning up for training now and the manager is there.
Andy
You actually want us to stick with this muppet over someone who at least has 3 working braincells?
eyes open
The problem was here way before DS and SS came along, I feel sorry for both tbh, its easy to pin the blame on the managers, everyone know our team's good enough to stay in this league, moxey needs to go or we need someone at board level with a footballing background to help him through his decisions, its not the managers fault, as we can see they barely get time to find out their best 11,
Jake
Saunders has at least started the clearout - your mate SS presided over a 4 year, yes 4 year, deal for Henry. And he is the one with the brain cells?
Definitive Wolf
I don't blame Saunders for taking the job but I think he was drawn to it because of the name, the facilities and the fact that it represented the best opportunity he had ever been presented with. If he had properly examined our recent history and the reality of having to progress the club, even keep it in the Championship, I think Doncaster's promotion push was always his best option. We have to stick with Saunders but he was not my choice - I would have stuck with Solbakken and if relegated, rebuilt with his philosophy. I feel uneasy about our future, even if we survive - we are in danger of becoming just another ordinary club which just happens to have a nice, largish ground.
Deluded Saunders
Saunders is going to take us down.FACT
Moxey...sell please

DS....clear off.....

AGREE! why would saunders turn this job down! he would possibbly make agood assistant, who knows!but we needed a father figure someone like what HODGSON did at steptoes yard,he steaded the ship, worked on the defence and went on from there"thats whats missing here?
Bring Solbakkagain
Totally agree.
Solbakken was doing well and would of got us equiped for the Prem, but was never going to happen in first season with the dross Mick bought.
Swallow your pride Morgan and bring him bakken!!

Please no no to Stale - dreadful failure, but, as much as Saunders looks out of his depth and doesn't look like he can turn this mess around, so too are the overpaid players lacking heart and fight.
The players don't want to fight for this club. So the answer could be clear out Saunders and all the gutless players but what do we do then.
Ant
Don't be an idiot do you really want the man back who gave Henry a 4 year contract extension, at least Saunders has got rid of Stearman, dropped Ward,Berra & Foley.

We were 9 points below the play-offs when this joker took over.

No offence but saw your last few televised games and saw you play with stale. You kinda deseve the position you find yourselves in.

Who gave Henry the 4 year extension .....?
Better ask who sanctioned /agreed to it

What planet are you on! SS got us in to this mess trying to play a style not suited to the Championship. DS has only been in charge for 8 games and you are already calling for his head! You are doing exactly what the fans did to MM, who did a great job given the circumstances he was working under. Let's hear something positive for once!

Too right Kev! You might want to start considering it Deano, we're second bottom and in the last 18 months have put together the worst run of results since the mid-80s and we all know what happened then!
He made all the right noises when he joined us but in my opinion he's not capable of turning this around. It won't happen but the board should admit they've made yet another costly error and call time before it really is too late.
There is currently one of the best English manager's in Nigel Adkins available and M & M should move heaven and earth to get him in. He turned Southampton around, a club who were in a very similar situation to the one Wolves are in now, he will be eager to prove a point to his last employers and wouldn't cost a penny in compensation. Its a no brainer for me.........

We are now in the position of needing the teams around us to fail otherwise it div 1 even if we do get 3 wins.

Tools is the right name for this lot Mark, Karl Henry is about as mobile as a bag of spanners and a toffee hammer hits harder than Doyle, never mind though, if you look at Deanos photo (above) I'm sure he's making up another song for the Southbank. I think he might be doing that tune off the Titanic, other suggestions are welcome, after all , we need something to cheer us up.

Not such a big headache as you may think. It's obvious that if we do go down, then we lose the players who are payed large wages.
On a brighter note, well done the under-21s last night. Sad to see it was such a small crowd watching. This team seems to be better value for money than going to watch the seniors.
Perhaps we should have all of the youngsters playing for us next season if we find ourselves in Division 1?

Please no square pegs in round holes, Sako left and Sigurdson right. Let’s be positive none of this 5-5-1 business!!! Best football we played was the last 30 mins at home to Cardiff 4-4-2

Its all about the money. Players should be motivated by playing for one of the best clubs in the country, not soley how much are you giving me! How times have changed. Sadly we have been getting short chaged as we pay the wages but the quality on the park is of a pub team playing for nothing at times.
Still think we will beat Milwall tonight and we will win all of our next games- onwards and upwards. COW!

All gone quiet on that front. I wouldn't be surprised if Henry was on the bench tonight. I would like to see Frimpong back alongside either O'Hara or Doumbia with Sako on left and Hunt/Cassidy on right. Only choice really as Boukari, Hammill are out still.
Siggy and Seb up front. Defence as it was.

time for moxey to go if the wage bill is that much it down to him shurely if we go down so should the players wages ?? why is it
that our under 21 team are in top league that they are not playing any of them in first team ? i see they beat top of the league
spurs yesterday this club is just a joke we need a fire sale and start again from top to bottom.
PeteNuts
Maybe you need to start thinking about it, since it is a stark and really rather likely reality at this present moment in time. Maybe if you can instil in the players the idea that they are fighting for their livelihoods here, they might ratchet their performance levels up a notch or three.
depressed
yes dean i agree but we also have to rely on the teams around us losing.
HOW YOU GOING TO FIX THAT??
chris h
Let us all hope we can get 3 points tonight.,and we then go on and climb away from the relegation zone. But with the badly needed striker not arriving,it looks like if we stay up it will be despite the Board and not because of them. Their level of incompetence is quite staggering. If we get relegated,I read somewhere,we will be the first football club to have suffered back to back relegations from the top two divisions of English football on two occasions. Tonight we will be playing Millwall, who have not received the £120m plus television money we have received in the last 4 seasons,we ought to be able to field a team more than capable of beating them, and yet will we? In the 3 years in the Premier the football club made a total of over £31m in profits , that is after player trading and paying all the wages. This should have been the warchest, to enable the club to spend on players to keep us in the Premier,or at the very least compete in the Championship. Now we face the prospect of more humiliation, a fire sale of players in the summer and scratching around for replacements like a pauper. One day they will have case studies on how poor management can destroy a football club, and the Wolves will be right up there with the likes of Portsmouth. The message from us right now will be ignore the quality of your first team,at your peril.
Wv11
Don't forget Steve Morgan was to put 30 million into the club as well .
I would rather be sitting in the old north bank and in prem then a new stand and in div one
wolfshead
In other words you don't have to be Portsmouth to do a Portsmouth, there are other ways as we are dangerously close to finding out.
Just to say if it is League 1 then Johnson, Doyle and O'Hara should be off if for no other reason than professional pride. That should balance the books somewhat if only on wage savings alone. And there would be others likely or of necessity to follow suit. No doubt "lean and hungry" would be back on the menu, along with "academy starlet" and "home grown talent". You know the rest.
However with 11 matches left, quarter of the season, there is the matter of staying in the Championship. I think we have the fighting spirit to do this and there is improvement. So this said I wish the lads the Very Best for tonight and think they may just take something from this match.
Stay focused and hope Millwall will be thinking about Sunday - hopefully.

I am sick and tired of all his drivel, stop talking about it and make it work. He had a huge chunk of the transfer window to get some players worthy of the shirt in and did nothing. He has himself to blame, there has been no improvement or lift since he arrived. I wish he would leave now.
I have a cunning plan !! Dean baldrick Saunders
I can just see the headlines now after we loose to MIllwall with a keogh hatrick and Bristol win
Dean Saunders " The only way is up"
And as for hunt calling the fans shocking..... Not a shocking as 2 home wins in 18 months sick note !
"And the ever-optimistic Molineux chief believes they can avoid the huge financial headache a second successive relegation would dump the club in."
It's less than 12 months ago that we were constantly being told how well the Club was being run financially by Moxey and Morgan, how we "would never do a Portsmouth" etc etc. Bit of a sea change to "huge financial headaches" isn't it?
I told all you ostriches with your everythng in the garden is lovely and we'll bounce straight back attitude that we were on a path back to the eighties due to lack of sufficient investment (£35 million NET spend over 7 years is peanuts by Premie League standards Mr. Morgan, specially when you've only spent £10). If you had really aspired to Premier League stability and European football as you claimed then you would have made a more serious attempt to compete with the Clubs who really do harbour such ambitions.
As we have seen so often under this regime talk is rarely backed up by actions.
As it is now all the parallels with the eigties are there - 4 managers in a year, a stale ageing squad which the Club can no longer afford, no sign of any serious young talent coming through to compete even at this level and a complete lack of direction from the senior "management" at Molineux. We even have a brand new half empty stand.
Definitive Wolf
However sincere the Fan's Parliament affair may have been, it still remains obvious that rubbish decision making at senior management level is largely responsible for the situation we find ourselves in - the players should also look hard at themselves, but the buck always stops at the top.

Sorry forgot to post my name on above content.

His address to the Fans Parliament may (or may not) have been sincere but it completey lacked any substance or explanations.
You are quite right about the players many of whom are shamelessly milking the Club, particularly the dressing room clique.
Angry Wolf
What do you expect him to say. We have little or no chance of a win tonight, and we are odds on to go down. Give the man a chance.

You are so right, Angry Wolf. In fact we should feel sorry for him. He is like someone who was encouraged to jump into a puddle but has found that in fact it was a water-filled 6 feet deep hole. I'm sure the job bears no resemblance to the one he imagined he was taking on. It's time he got some luck, starting tonight.
Bully1012
A couple of things.....1) He needs to start considering it and so had the players. At times, it doesn't look like they realise the seriousness of the situation and 2) why does Saunders keep banging on about "needing 2 or 3 more loan players?" He is aware we've got 11 games left to save our season I assume? Oh, and "next season we're going for promotion?" To the Championship or Premiership?!
issa nissa
I think some of you lot are playingg football manager to much think positive and positive will happen I went to the watford game and the atmosphere was better apart from towards the end when the ugly side of some of the crowd showed up and booed Henry and hunt I'm not a happy clapper and your all entitled to show your opinions and feelings but remember if you can meet with

If we had shipped these players out 2 years ago we wouldn't be in this mess, if he isn't thinking about relegation, why haven't we signed a striker and midfield player.

We do however have Moxey working tirelessly on these issues, that is so reassuring!!!

At least Dean has got rid of the back four . This in itself is worthy of a little respect.
I shall eat with boots tomorrow if we don't win this one.
The Unhappy Wanderer
I'm as bemused as anybody at some of Saunders' comments, but I don't disagree with any of this, so why not give him a break? Whatever we think of him it's undeniable that he's got one of the toughest jobs in English football at the moment and another change now can't possibly improve things. A bit of constructive criticism is one thing but I don't see what constant abuse is going to achieve, except to make his job even harder. I have thought relegation is likely since the Ipswich game, but we are not down yet. To have any chance of staying up we need to play better of course, and I think Saunders needs to be given as much chance as possible to make that happen.
As for the people who want Solbakken back. Did you not see the performances against Peterborough, Ipswich and Luton?
Eleven in Gold
The performance was by the players not Solbakken. They are to blame. Bring back Stale.
Definitive Wolf
Solbakken will not be back but, despite the three matches you refer to, don't forget that initially he was made to work with a ball and chain on his foot (a possibly disgruntled TC), then he was denied a director of football who hopefully would have known the English leagues, then he was allowed to appoint two right hand men with no more knowledge of the British football scene and life in England than he had. Recipe for disaster, all of it - like three new boys joining a school full of well established boys: real targets for the already discontented. The whole thing could have been thought out so much better. I think it might have occurred to me, but then what do I know?
wontgoagain
I think it might be time to start the bring back Glen Hoddle campaign !

Vincent Cagliostro
Dean Saunders are you clinically deluded?
“I’m not even thinking about getting relegated,” said Saunders.......“I’m thinking about us winning three games on the trot, then the league table will look completely different.”
Histrory confirms that there are actually very few truly successful football mangers and these tend to be employed by top clubs for a relatively long period of time. The vast majority of low IQ pretenders are merely recyled on a regular basis. So never mind Dean, soon after you have relegated my club, I am sure some other equally desperate outfit will take a chance on you (again).
One day you may even enjoy a short period of success, but then even a fool is right some time!
Please prove me wrong, I challenge you!

So much is hidden from us.We are told the club is scheduled to make a loss of £6.5m this season. But is this a loss on the football side,Wolves 1986 Ltd, or is it down to Wolves Property Ltd, ie paying for the balance on the stand, the new museum and Compton.Has anyone asked the question? Then we have the non appointment of Steve Bruce rearing its head again, and critical fans get the blame, yet again? On Monday 20th Feb 2012,Steve Bruce was 4/7 odds on to land the Wolves job. If you check the Express and Star site that day there was plenty of criticism, but not overwhelming, I said' Bruce is by far the best available', and some others agreed. I find it hard to believe that the negative comments were the deciding factor. But the fans are being made the scapegoat again.I have heard a rumour that the decision to appoint Bruce was overturned following representation from a number of players, who wanted Connor, with Jez Moxey acting as go between with the players and Steve Morgan. Can we have the truth from Tim Nash and Martin Swain, please,I am sure they have a good idea what went on.

We have nothing to fear but fear itself. Play with flair and freedom. Drop the few toxic personalities of a previous era, they're on their way out of the Mol whether we stay up or not. I think we will stay up because we have enough reasonably-talented players, untarnished by the few bad apples in the barrel. Like him or not, we should stick with Deano. Another managerial change would be unthinkable. So what if he has not much managerial experience, everyone has to start somewhere, He has enough knowledge and ability to keep us up and maybe even challenging next season.
Pernickety
Generous comment, DancesWithWolves. Hope you're right re. survival. Regarding your comment, "everyone has to start somewhere" - so correct, but did it have to be with us?
Filthy Wolf
Oh dear. So many games without a win, Dean, not many left and the reality has not kicked in yet has it? We had the same with Connor. I agree with many that SS was the better manager but against Saunders most would rate higher. He really is out of his depth and the irony is that the team he quit, Doncaster, look set to make the Championship and replace us.
Angels Bridge
If i hear Saunders say once more if we win 3 on the bounce we will be moving the the right direction! What about 1 win that would be a start. Unfortunately Saunders does not have the tactical knowledge to either win a match or pick the correct team as every match the starting line up and formation seems to change. When winning at Barnsley and playing well why change the formation which resulted in the team losing. Why didnt he start against Watford with the same team that finished the 2nd half so well against Cardiff? and where is the Pole - Saunders says the pole still might have a future at Wolves, it would be nice to see him on the pitch or even on the bench for starters. Sadly Saunders in-experience will not keep this team in the Championship which is just to hard to comprehend. A win tonight might just give a glimmer of hope, but thats all it is
Leon
It was if we had 2 wins on the row yesterday, now it's if we had 3 wins on the row.. Will Saunders be saying if we had 4 wins on the row tomorrow. I fear for the whole club, for all the penny pinching by Morgan and Moxey it will now cost far more in the long run to get back to anywhere near where we was.
Everyone is to blame, players, managers Morgan and Moxey, something is totally wrong at our club from top to bottom.. So don't just have a go at one part, it's the whole lot that's gone rotten.
If Saunders cannot win tonight, he should resign and give a manager with experience a chance. We cannot do the same thing we did with Terry Connor.. Carry on regardless.. This is not a carry on film, this is our club we are talking about.. Everything should be done to retain our status.. Whether that be changing managers or playing staff.. We are woeful upfront.. Why are we not begging every premier league team with a spare striker for a player.. Money should be immaterial now, safety at all costs.. If we have to pay a team a million to loan a player, we must do it!
The Flying Winger
Saunders is still going on about 2 or 3 loan players in the next week or two, when Is someone going to wake up and stop this fantasy.
WORRIED WOLF

One thing DS should definately not do tonight is play Hunt - not because of his controversial comments about the fans, but because he was the worst player on the pitch against Watford (with the possible exception of Karl Henry). Personally, I'd go for Sako on the left and Siggy on the right with Doyle and SEB upfront. Surely one of those four attacking players could muster a up a goal or two...right????

We all know that there are HUGE problems within our ONCE GREAT CLUB, Why NOT slash the wage bill by the following methods--------
1, Sack Jez
2, Sack Deano
3, Do a complete shake up of players wages with WIN bonus.
4, Bring in Wilkins as Technical Director of Football.
5, Bring in either Nigel Adkins or Di Canio as NEW MANAGER.
But for now---- Let's drop the useless deadwood and PLAY THE KIDS, IF we go down then so be it, the kids would have some 1st team experience under their belts.
I wonder IF at the end of last season and Jez reducing players wages for this season. Was this the start of the Deadwood saying "To hell with them, we won't give our all"? Anybody thinking the same as me?
Phil Maringa
I think we just have to accept that we're not a big club anymore and League 1 is where we should be. Afterall, that is where Coventry and Sheffield United are.
Morgan and Moxey are preparing us for life in League 1, whilst we consolidate, sort the finances out and try and get back in to the Championship in 5 years time.

Get behind the lads let's stop the bickering Morgan and moxey have came out and said what they said. At least they've had the decency to do that. We've gotta pull together and get out of this mess. Keep the faith one win can change everything. At least Saunders has sorted the back four out. I have seen progress. If we go down we go down at least we can finally clear out all the deadwood and rebuild with youth! Tonight is another tough game millwall are the favourites we are the underdogs, we can't leave the den without any points. Give them hell lads!

Dean will you shut up with all this drivel you keep coming out with please .
You've already proved to the footballing world you have no tactical skill or mind set , do the honourable thing and leave before the knife edge we are on gives way .
We really need to push the boat out and get Adkins in now before its too late . No win tonight I fear that'll be curtains regardless of mathematically still being able to survive .

Did anyone watch Villa v Man City. Villa battling relegation and the noise and support the crowd gave them to the end even losing. Whatever we have at the moment get behind them it's our only hope!!!

Keep watching for the "support" they get if they lose 1-0 to QPR!"

Orlando Wolves
While hearing nothing for days now, rumour or otherwise, concerning incoming transfers to assist in the relegation battle, we read that Wolves are planning to unload top earners IF they are relegated.
The lack of activity in the search for a goalscorer to assist the club in staving off relegation, would tend to suggest that Wolves have accepted the fact that they WILL be relegated at the end of the season.
I may be a tad suspicious and cynical here, but this would fit the Jez Moxey pattern of years past, i.e., get relegated then sell off players (if he can), balance the books and claim that his job is done. That is his measure of success.
Meanwhile, trot out `Dean the optimist` on a daily basis in the Express and Star in a bid to butter up the fans, in the hope of keeping them quiet.
This club is SCREAMING OUT FOR A IS DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL. Please Mr. Morgan, take note, your club cannot be successfully run solely on a financial basis. Sometimes, football has to part of the equation.
A win tonight is essential - I live in hope.

Be careful, Morgan might just give the Director of Football job to Private PieN'pint.

DS is the most incompetent manager I've ever seen. He's done the impossible and is starting to make that clown TC look good ! However I saw the slightest glimmer of hope when DS subbed that useless waste of a footballer Henry. Lets hope it wasn't a fluke and he drops him permanently. I hold Henry guilty of dragging this team down with his bad challenges and control of the dressing room., he adds nothing to the team and just stands infront of the back 4 like a dummy. No goals, no assists just passing back to the keeper .
ADKINS or DICANIO to save our season !

I don't believe it!
Wolves U21s 4 -Spurs U21s 3
Spurs are third from top, and Wolves are second from bottom of the division below Spurs!
So why don’t Wolves, who haven’t won in 13 games, just put their U21s on the pitch for their next Championship match?
Our kids have earned the right!

A few weeks ago, before the Leicester game, I took our remaining schedule and made "realistic" predictions for each game. As I saw it, we would win enough games to survive. Here was my view:
Leicester: Lose (correct)
Leeds: Lose (wrong - draw, +1 point)
Derby: Lose (wrong - draw, +1 point)
Barnsley: Win (wrong - loss, -3 points)
Cardiff: Lose (correct)
Watford: Lose (wrong - draw, +1 point)
So as you see, I did not predict us gaining many points over this period of time. While my predictions were not correct, we are on the same level of points gained over the period as I predicted (+3). Now for the remaining fixtures, in which I have predicted a net gain of +15 points. (I know they're not in the right order, by the way).
Millwall: Win
N. Forest: Lose
Huddersfield: Win
Bolton: Lose
Charlton: Win
Burnley: Lose
Hull: Lose
Brighton: Lose
Bristol City: Win
Birmingham: Win
Middlesbrough: Lose
So I still see us as able to pick up 15 points over the remaining games, plus some of those losses may actually become draws as well. We just went through a group of tough fixtures, and I wasn't expecting us to get much out of them anyway. In fact, I made my predictions before I realized how great Barnsley has been doing recently, so our +3 points is actually better than it could have been. Regardless, though, the games are coming in now that we need to, and SHOULD BE, winning. Starting with Millwall tonight! COME ON YOU WOLVES!
