Rivals united in chasing Olympic dream

Wolves and Albion look set to fly the flag at the London Olympics after Mick McCarthy and Roy Hodgson today backed their players for Team GB.
Both managers have given their blessing if any of their men are called up for the summer Games.
Wolves’ Wayne Hennessey, Matt Jarvis and Steven Fletcher are all understood to be favouring accepting their invitations to play.
Coach Stuart Pearce can pick a squad of just 18 players which can only include three over 23-years-old. Hennessey and Jarvis are 25 and Fletcher 24.
Albion’s Craig Dawson is a favourite from Albion while Joe Mattock and George Thorne are well known to Pearce. Northern Ireland’s Chris Brunt could also feature as one of the over 23 players.
And Pearce would not find any opposition from McCarthy.
“I wouldn’t be trying to stop anyone from playing in the Olympics,” he said.
“If someone from here had the chance of being in that team, which went on to win an Olympic gold medal, what would any of my players think about it if I stopped them going?
“Can you imagine being in the Olympics with a gold medal around your neck or any medal around your neck?
“I played in a World Cup and a European Championships, but if I was a player, if could I play in the Olympics and potentially win it, it would be brilliant, fantastic.”
The final clashes with the first day of the Premier League season on August 11 but McCarthy is prepared to give any players extra time off should Team GB go all the way.
A total of 184 players have indicated their wish to be considered out of the 191 letters sent by the Football Association to those eligible.
And Hodgson echoed McCarthy by insisting he wants his men to experience a ‘one off’ chance.
“I’d be very happy for the player and I would just hope we had enough players in the squad to cover for him,” said Hodgson.
“And for a lot of players, if they’re towards the end of their career, it might be an offer that only comes once.
“I would be very positive to an enquiry for any of our players and if the player wanted to take up that offer I would expect everybody to be happy for him.”
