Wayne Jones beaten by Adrian Lewis
Thursday 29th December 2011, 6:00AM GMT.
Wolverhampton’s Wayne Jones had no answer to the clinical finishing of Adrian Lewis as he tumbled out of the PDC World Championships to the reigning champion.
‘The Wanderer’ met his match at the Alexandra Theatre in London as Lewis hit the ‘jackpot’ to shut out Jones 4-0 and progress to the quarter-finals.
Jones had produced some fine performances in reaching the last 16 for the first time since 2006, but found this one too hot to handle last night.
Lewis hit 12 from 18 attempts at doubles during the win and dropped only four legs against Jones.
The Stoke superstar now remains on course to become only the second player, after Phil Taylor, to retain the PDC world title.
He said: “I’m happy with that. Every time I was under the cosh I produced the goods and I can’t ask for any more than that.
“My finishing was brilliant and, as long as that’s consistent, I know I can pull out the scores when I have to.
“I’m really hungry to keep this title and I can keep improving.
“I’ve got a day off to regroup, have a practice and come back on Friday to push on towards the title.
“My mind’s strong, my throwing’s good, my finishing is excellent and I can go up there and just enjoy it now.”
