Wolves beat West Brom at the Hawthorns in reserve ‘mini-derby’
Wednesday 14th December 2011, 9:09AM GMT.
Johnny Gorman’s late winner settled the Black Country reserve derby in Wolves’ favour to leave West Brom striker Roman Bednar red-faced at a chilly Hawthorns.
The Northern Ireland international winger drilled home substitute Zeli Ismail’s left-wing cross from 12 yards at the far post.
The 1-0 win was just reward for a strong second-half performance against the FA Premier Reserve League South leaders last night.
But Bednar was left cursing himself after blasting a fourth minute penalty against the bar and over.
The out-of-favour striker was so keen to take the spot-kick that he wrestled the ball from Kemar Roofe, who won the penalty when he was bundled over by Wolves right-back Matt Doherty.
After that, chances were few and far between for both teams.
Wolves’ only real opportunity of the first half came in the 37th minute when Jake Cassidy headed wide of the near post, after the Baggies failed to clear Anthony Forde’s corner.
But it was a different story after the break, with openings at both ends.
West Brom striker Romaine Sawyers had two bites of the cherry from just inside the penalty area, only to see his efforts blocked by Oliver Bashford then Doherty.
Wolves returned to the attack and Sam Winnall’s angled volley from the corner of the six-yard box was blocked on the line, after he crept around the back to meet another Forde corner on 58.
Forde was forced off in the 67th minute after being caught by a late tackle by West Brom left-back Cameron Gayle, who was booked.
The Baggies threatened with two towering headers from Craig Dawson, the first of which was held by goalkeeper Aaron McCarey, while the second was deflected over.
Winnall should have done better when he drilled his shot straight at keeper Marton Fulop, after cutting inside on 76 minutes.
But Wolves didn’t have to wait long for the winner as Gorman pounced.
