Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Aston Villa 1 West Brom 2
Saturday 22nd October 2011, 5:10PM BST.
Paul Scharner scored a brilliant winner as West Brom came from behind to claim their first league victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park since May 1979.
Darren Bent gave Villa the lead with a 23rd-minute penalty, but a highly-charged derby game swung in the Baggies favour when Chris Herd was sent off an apparent stamp on Jonas Olsson, although neither side appealed.
Chris Brunt missed a penalty from the resulting decision but West Brom levelled when Olsson headed home on the stroke of half-time, before Scharner’s sublime finish from another Brunt corner shortly after the break.
James Collins overcame a groin injury to resume his partnership at the heart of the Villa defence with Richard Dunne, so Ciaran Clark dropped to the bench while Herd came in for Fabian Delph in the centre of midfield.
Charles N’Zogbia was handed a place in the starting line-up along with Barry Bannan, as Emile Heskey and Stephen Ireland were named among the substitutes.
West Brom boss Roy Hodgson made just the one change as Somen Tchoyi made way for Peter Odemwingie after his goalscoring heroics against Wolves last weekend, while Zoltan Gera was on the bench as Graham Dorrans recovers from a knee injury.
The match began at a frantic pace with Villa having the best of the early chances as Bent blazed over in the fifth minute, after being incorrectly flagged offside, before Bannan saw his rasping half-volley go just over the bar moments later.
Villa defender Alan Hutton was lucky to stay on the pitch in the 13th minute after a horror tackle on Baggies forward Shane Long – who limped out shortly afterwards to be replaced by Tchoyi – which somehow escaped a yellow card from referee Phil Dowd.
The home side took the lead 10 minutes later from the penalty spot, after Steven Reid was put under pressure by Gabby Agbonlahor as he attempted to shield the ball back to goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Dowd pointed straight to the spot after Agbonlahor was caught by Foster’s hand and Bent sent Foster the wrong way, as he dispatched a low spot-kick into the bottom-left corner of the net.
West Brom were presented with a chance to even it from the penalty spot up in the 37th minute when Herd was shown a straight red card by Dowd – after his linesman had flagged – for an apparent stamp on Olsson, although no visiting players appealed.
Villa’s players argued with Dowd and they will have vindicated when Brunt smashed the resulting spot-kick wide of the post.
Hutton was withdrawn with blood pouring from his head after a collision with N’Zogbia and was replaced by Carlos Cuellar, before West Brom drew level on the stroke of half-time with a powerful Olsson header.
Brunt whipped a dangerous corner into the six-yard box and Olsson outjumped and outmuscled the static Richard Dunne and James Collins to head the ball past goalkeeper Shay Given.
The Baggies exposed the vulnerability of the Villa defence from set-pieces again after the break, as they scored a second goal from a corner.
Brunt’s curling ball picked out Scharner, who controlled the ball deftly then executed a superb half-volley finish to smash the ball past Given and was then booked, for revealing the same T-shirt which had so irked Wolves manager Mick McCarthy.
The visitors controlled the game from this point forward without ever really testing Given, although Collins had a chance to equalise in the 71st minute from a Bannan corner, when he escaped his marker but could only head over.
West Brom missed a chance to put the icing in the cake with a counter attack in injury time as Tchoyi crossed for Odemwingie, but the Nigerian striker completely missed the ball as he attempted to side-foot it past Given.
Ten-man Villa took the direct route as they pressed for an equaliser in the dying minutes, but West Vrom held on to take all three points.

Oh so very nearly a perfect morning!
Yes,a little contraversial but they we’re both warned and maybe it’s the start of ref’s getting tougher a set pieces in the box, anyway it evens up the blatant foul on Olsson by Berra last week.

Sweet,very very sweet.
The day before we played wolves,I said on here-
‘we have a stronger squad than last season, and I believe we will soon ‘click’ into much better form,so why shouldn’t it begin tomorrow?’.
So step aside Mystic Meg,even you didn’t see this comin’.
As for villa, they’ll probably be whinging about the sending off,but as this story says, the challenge from Hutton on Shane Long was ‘X’ rated,he could easily have done much more damage,so he should have been red-carded earlier.
It also meant that our MOTM of last week had to limp off the pitch early, putting us at a disadvantage.
So we’ve now beaten them in the last two meetings, home and away, which justifies the claim that-
THE BAGGIES ARE THE TOP WEST MIDLANDS CLUB!!!
(Anyone that disagrees had better prepare a very good argument, seeing as they keep losing to us………..)

Villa are a physical side, taking the nature of their play from McLeish. Hutton should have been sent off for a shocking ‘tackle’ on Long, and should be given a 3-match ban retrospectively.
Long was kicked up in the air from the start of the game without any protection from Dowd with the inevitable result.
Villa got what they deserved when Herd was sent off and the footballing side won without problem. Foster was unworked. What a waste of money Bent and NZogbia are.

just wanna say that there’s no need to worry, because it turns out that 11 of them have been found in the home dressing room at villa park.
They even have their names and numbers on their backs.
And tonight, instead of carrots, they’ll be eating a special treat of humble pie……..
Oh,it’s great to be a Baggie……….

Hello from cloud nine!
After years of supporting us through thick and thin and thin again, to beat Wolves and Villa in the space of a week is something I could only previously dream about.
Roy Hodgson and this team will go down as legends.
Such tremendous effort today.
Proud to be a Baggie.

Quality performance by the baggies. Shame for Shane Long, but Tchoi was class when he came on along with Olsson and Mulumbu. Hutton is a thug, and should have been sent off. Referee’s performance was disappointing. We still have dozza on the bench to come back and some up and coming kids coming up, so the future is looking good. Boing Boing

What another great derby win, especially as we have waited for a long time for this one!
Again just as last Sunday, Olsson was strong at the back and also showed his strength at the front with that well taken headder.
Brilliant goal by Scharner, a bit unlucky to be booked for his celebration. I hope Long is OK, Hutton should have been sent off.
I think Odemwingie needs some confidence building?
May be we need other penalty takers, Mulumbu or Scharner?
All the best for next Saturday!

Today we have won the biggest West Mids derby, beating Aston Villa 2-1 on their own ground. That makes it two West Mids derbies in less than a week. haven’t beaten Villa for thirty two years covering fourteen matches on their soil. Thanks to that football brain that is Roy Hodgson and his formidable BAGGIES. Digest these words all you ALBION fans, be proud of your club on this day.

Wow, how bad are Villa? Icing on the cake has to be bringing Heskey on to play…centre midfield! You couldn’t write it.
Strange game. Villa came out to kick us and Dowd got pretty much every decision wrong (apart from their pen). But we deserved the win, if only because we were the team trying to play football.
I’ve had the misfortune to turn into a knee expert and I’m concerned about Shane Long. I said at the time of the tackle (watching it on TV) that I felt it could be a cruciate ligament. The way he hobbled around afterwards supported my fears. Pain in the back of the knee? Oh dear. Fingers crossed for a miracle.

Stop ya whinging villa! You were beaten by a much better team today and lucky to get away with the end scoreline. You should have had 2 players sent off, and went for us with the heavy stuff from the off. You got what you deserved. Ginger hasn’t been at the seals too long but sounds like one already!!
A great two weeks, let’s hope we can do the reds next week too.
A limited Villa side tried to kick us off the park but justice was done in the end. Hopefully Shane is not too badly injured and will be back soon. Hutton is a thug and should have been sent off. I think Jonas used his experience to wind Hird up and it worked. Onwards and upwards, I think Roy has got has got his mojo back.

Great performace. We outclassed a terrible singles team last week and a terrible seals team this week. The only issue was the lack of police presence outside the ground, we got assaulted by seal fans outside the ground when we became detached from the Albion fans on the way to witton station… Only saving grace was the PROPER villa fans who saved us getting a bigger kicking…. Thanks!
Otherwise such a great game, we look a solid premier league team unlike about 8 teams in the league who will surely finish below us. Kings of the midlands without doubt! Who would have said that 10 years ago!
You did us proud

What a week!!! We controlled the game from the first whistle, even before the sending off. The stats say it all, they had 1 shot on target all match, and that was a free shot from 12 yards! (Chris Brunt take note!).
Defensively we look the best we have for years. We look organised and everyone on the pitch looks to know what they are meant to be doing which sounds obvious but that has not always been the case at the albion!
On a negative note i really hope Long’s injury isn’t too bad although from the initial comments it doesn’t look good. It was an awful tackle. McLeish has been in the press this week saying he wanted his players to “get in the face” of the opposition. They certainly took note of that advice, everytime Long got the ball they were straight through him. It wasn’t a surprise when he finally got injured. Fingers crossed.
Another couple of things to work on and think about…….we need to find a penalty taker. Brunty’s record is awful. When fit i would like to see Long take them, saw him tuck a few away for Reading. Anyone else have any suggestions.
Finally, i really don’t think Thomas is playing well at all and he hasn’t for a long time. I have seen people asking where Gera fits in when he is back fit. In my opinion it has to be in place of Thomas.
Bring on Liverpool!!

Obvious Villa targetted Long for rough treatment which put him out of the game
No doubt they were smarting from drubbing they
got at city lets hope injury is not too serious. The dismissal of Herd was not suprising he was put in for his aggression
Felt if Shane had played a full part we would
have won by a bigger margin Foster had very
little to do. McLeish made poor tactical moves
What have they done to Nzogbia Bent not good
enough for England our defence looking good
next two games will show how good we are.

Excellent result again, just need to keep the momentum going, hopefully we can repeat last seasons result against Liverpool, bit concerned about the fact that Dalglish is making a big song and dance again, this time about referees not “protecting” and “respecting” Suarez, so you know whats coming don’t you?, remember what happened after Pullis said pretty much the same thing about Stoke before they played us last season, I can see history repeating.
Still, all in all a brilliant week, anyone else noticed how the sun shines when we do? God (Jehovah, Allah, Krishna, Vishnu, Rama, take your pick) is a defo a Baggies fan!!!!

Fabulous win, great to stick it up the Vile. We outplayed the them before and after the red card, which I thought was an odd decision, particularly as even Olsson didn’t appeal for anything.
However the tackle on Long was disgraceful, he should have been charged for GBH it was that bad! I wouldn’t be surprised if McLeish has targeted Long and I think that the FA should look at video evidence of that and ban him for 3 games at least. Hope the injury on Long isn’t too bad, the kid has been superb since we signed him.

Gera is back soon, Coxy and some very talented and hungry England International youngsters waiting to get a chance to play for the stars in stripes!

39 Sherlock,
that Hutton ‘tackle’ on Shane Long very much reminded me of the infamous ‘Battle of Bramhall’,when Sheff. Utd’s George Santos dived two footed into Andy Johnson, sending him cartwheelin’ through the air.
Santos was immediately shown a red card, and then United, who had him on loan, sacked him after the game.
Hutton wasn’t even cautioned on saturday by Ref.Dowd, and the villa manager said afterwards that he did nothing wrong.
So much for consistent Referees, and Managers who’s opinion you respect……….

Oh, George, did ya attoo ? JT did play well enough and you couldn’t blame anyone not inviting tackles from the madman Hutton. Roy should throw protocol out of the window and ask the F.A. to look at that tackle. Drogba saw red for Chelsea for a bad one but it was a 5 compared to a 10 from Hutton. Dowd was very poor with the big decisions and his linesman on one side was wrong on at least TWO occasions, one for the Herd sending off, and one for St.Pete’s goal.

At least we know how to silence our neighbours, eh?
Some of the pundits comments on the sending off were laughable. On a football pitch, Olsson gives as good as he gets – some might want to deny this, hide from it or go nudge, nudge, wink, wink – but, he is no different to the majority of defenders! I’m passing no judgement; my point is he accepts ‘bending the rules’ and only appeals when obvious things go on such as trips, tugging, etc. so he wouldn’t jump up and down about a tussle with Herd because it could be him next time around.
Hutton, on the other hand, should’ve gone. Like it or not, in the modern game arguing, “I got the ball first” is no defence when the force of the tackle is a potential leg breaker. What ‘saved’ Long was the fact Hutton turned at the last minute and hit him with his legs rather than his feet. Poor indecision by Dowd.
I thought Albion played a measured game and Trevor Francis remains a stupid ass!

Before you next embarrass yourself on a public forum, I suggest you learn the laws of the game. The relevant rule says : “A player is guilty of serious foul play if he uses excessive force or brutality against an opponent when challenging for the ball when it is in play.
A tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent must be sanctioned as serious foul play.
Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.
Any player who is guilty of serious foul play should be sent off….”

Thomas appears to be the new Carson if you like but imo does not deserve it , yes he did have a poor start to the season ( he was not alone in this) and in the last two matches as performed well , again imo for what it is worth.
ps i a’int fond of Manure or Liverpool either.

81 Bully,
if lonely says he’s innocent,I believe him,at least he holds his hands up if he’s sussed, this ‘TC’ just lurks in the shadows, and was caught out the other week when he couldn’t remember the names of which Albion players were sent off at Blackpool, despite claiming to go to all the away games.
He never did tell me where he sits in the Hawthorns, and doesn’t want to meet any of us,so it carries all the trademarks of shadrag,
how sick is he feeling at this point in time?

87 TC (AKA village idiot)-
funny how you always forget things you don’t like to hear.
It was last week that you said Albion fans were upset that Jara got sent off at Blackpool, and a REAL Albion fan then corrected you by pointing out you GOT THE WRONG PLAYER,Ibanez was the innocent guy.
Obviously you read the story somewhere at the time, but because it was a while ago,you forgot the details.
And strangely enough, when ‘laughingstockwolf’ was challenged,he used to say he sat in the Brummie, but didn’t want to meet any of us.
And your ‘happy clappers’ is a term associated with the wolves site.
You’re obviously a phoney.
And not a very clever one at that.
(p.s.- you told us a while ago that you were on an E&S photo featured here, that showed the Smethwick End crowd-now you say you sit in the Brummie-what a fraud.)

Your one-eyed ignorance is palpable. If you consider Hutton’s challenge anything other than a straight Red you really do have a head full of fairground music my friend.
My Nan always told me when I was young to eat plenty of fish because it was ‘brain food’. However ‘Mr. Seal’ you quite clearly provide evidence to the contrary. Then again, it is difficult to nurture something that is evidently not there.
Feel free to come back to this site when you have something constructive to say……… although I won’t be holding my breath.

92 S.I.S.,
Epstein/Paul/Ringo/TC,etc. are all the same person-
it’s a wolves fan we know who is so miserable at the dire situation over there, that he’s trying to stir it here because he things ‘why should Albion fans be happy while we’re suffering?’.
He’s just a very sad individual.

if you read my post at 91 again SLOWLY,so you can UNDERSTAND what I said, you will see that it’s YOU that got it wrong.
So you tell me to get my eyes tested, when you haven’t read my post properly.
You really are the biggest idiot to ever come on here.
(p.s.- they BOTH got sent off,you would have known if you’d read the story properly at the time-such a phoney).

congratulations on beating villa….
the problem with most clubs is that the only glory they achieve is beatin the local rivals , that goes for everyone… but having the bragging rights is only short term…
the long term objective of winning trophies regularly is only achieved if you can see the bigger picture just ask man utd/chelseas/arsenal/liverpool…those clubs have dominated domestic football for decades, even if they do lose to thier local rivals or the handfull of games a season.
i hope we all do well, baggies, villa, walsall.
i’ve got a sense of humour, i bloody need one at the moment….. a draw with swansea at home…indeed…lol

Total Clot,
Pardon me, So if someone told you to jump in the cut, you would do it, as you haven’t a mind of your own. In my opinion severe bone bruising and a chipped bone backs up what I thought at the time, it WAS an horrendous assault. Only a Dingle would agree with your point of view, as they like O.T.T. contact.

Why does the e&d persist on letting Wolves fans post non relevant, informative or humorous articles on here whilst blocking Baggies from doing the same in return?
Whoever is moderating these pages have totally destroyed the Baggies side, our pages used to be lively with colourful characters who actually had something to say, now, thanks to the over zealous and biased moderating, many of those posters have disappeared.
You only have to look at the most commented articles box at the top of this page. In a week where we have beat our two nearest rivals, one not achieved since 1979, and Wolves have not achieved anything out of the ordinary, of those most commented stories above, it breaks down like this-
Wolves 837
Albion 194
That’s over a 400% difference! 400% are you sure? given our gates vary by (25,000) + – 1000 or so, the only conclusion can be this, either Albion fans actually go to the games, or, Wolves should be out selling Real Madrid each week, which they don’t.
If there comments pages are bulging now, just imagine what they would be like if they had actually beat us and Villa in the same week? we wouldn’t get a look in, still at least our comments pages would be bigger, albeit because it would be full of Wolves fans!
Conclusion then, either start treating us with a level playing field, or lose us.
