Captain Dan Bowyer, front, lifts the trophy to celebrate T20 glory with his Wolverhampton team-mates and club scorer, 78-year-old Mary Chapman
Wolverhampton are hoping for a weekend win double after lifting the Black Country Floodlit T20 competition.
The Danescourt outfit took the spoils with victory over hosts Himley in a rain-affected final and will be targeting further success tomorrow when they entertain Cheadle in the final of the Staffordshire Cup.
Steady rain forced proceedings to be delayed by an hour last night and resulted in the contest being reduced, initially, to 15 overs per side.
But when the action got under way, West Bromwich Dartmouth’s New Zealander Jeet Raval, guesting for Himley’s Indian Test batsman Wasim Jaffer, lifted the gloom with a quickfire 54 that included four sixes.
A heavy downpour brought an end to Himley’s innings after eight completed overs, leaving Wolves needing to overhaul their 76-2 to lift the JW Brandrick Trophy.
That task proved well within the reach of Dan Bowyer’s side thanks to a series of lusty blows from South African Johannes Bothma and another classy innings from rising star Tom Fell.
Man of the match Bothma blasted four sixes on his way to a rapid 29 before Fell clinched victory and the most valuable player of the tournament award with an unbeaten 32. The four-team competition has been held all week and also included Old Hill and Walsall.
