Jonathan Trott visits West Midlands
Monday 8th August 2011, 6:00AM BST.
England star Jonathan Trott took time out from his schedule to support disabled cricketers at a charity match in the West Midlands.
The Warwickshire batsman, who is currently recovering from a shoulder injury, visited Bournville Cricket Club yesterday to cheer on the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) Physical Disability XI in a 40-over match.
The team took on the British Army Development XI to raise funds and awareness for local charity the Bill Lloyd Memorial Trust Fund for the development of cricket and cricketers at grass roots level.
Funds will also go to the Army Benevolent Fund, the Royal British Legion and the British Association for Cricketers with Disabilities.
Trott, who has been ruled out of the third Test against India on his home ground of Edgbaston, said: “It’s all about getting everyone involved and it’s been fantastic to see the disabled players in action.
“During the last one-day series the England team, including myself, visited Headley Court to meet some of the servicemen who have been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan and that was really humbling for all of us.
“And seeing this match was the same. It’s great to see everyone taking part in cricket and enjoying it.
“The success of the England team over the last few years really seems to have captured the imagination of the public and we all hope that will lead to more people taking part at all levels of the game.”
Yesterday’s event also included a visit from the ECB’s TwelfthMan Hub, the ECB Cricket Factory, an auction to win cricket memorabilia, Kwik cricket games, a marching band, face painters and craft stalls.
Trott was also promoting the ECB Cricket in the City festival, taking place today in Victoria Square, Birmingham.
England and India cricket stars were there and there was due to a chance to win signed memorabilia.
