Heavy defeat for Dudley Heathens
Thursday 14th July 2011, 6:00AM BST.
Belle Vue 53 Dudley Heathens 15
Dudley Heathens crashed to their biggest defeat of the season in a match that saw four of their riders injured.
Tom Perry, the club’s 2010 rider of the year, was given precautionary X-rays on a neck injury but was released with no broken bones.
Kyle Newman, Ashley Morris and captain Jon Armstrong also picked up arm, shoulder and knee injuries respectively.
The encounter, on a grippy surface, was littered with falls and the heat seven crash between Perry, Morris and Belle Vue’s Chris Widman prompted a track examination by referee Peter Clarke.
But the meeting continued despite Dudley protests, the Heathens fielding only one rider in the 12th race and none at all in heat 10.
A 10.30pm curfew brought an end to their suffering with three races to run and the result will stand.
Club chairman Nigel Pearson said: “Tom has no broken bones, Ashley has pulled out of tonight’s Leicester match but hopes to be back at the weekend.
“Kyle had a cut on his arm and it was put in a sling but he should be OK. Jon took a knock on the knee and wasn’t comfortable. He didn’t withdraw officially from the meeting but he didn’t want to ride.
“The behaviour of the Dudley riders has not been brought into question by the referee.”
