Villa are closing in on a £5million deal for Shay Given as manager Alex McLeish prepares to make his first signing since his controversial switch from Birmingham City.
New Villa boss McLeish wants Real Madrid midfielder Sergio Canales to be his first big signing – on a season-long loan.
Randy Lerner has given McLeish the green light to make a £9million bid for Wigan winger Charles N’Zogbia and make him one of Villa’s top earners.

Birmingham City will not allow central defender Scott Dann to leave until its full valuation of the player is met. Blues have received a joint bid – in the region of £16 million – from Stoke City for Dann and striker Cameron Jerome.
