Jason Welborn feels better than ever

Tividale’s Jason Welborn feels ‘better than ever’ after picking another win at Bedworth Civic Hall.

The light middleweight shut out Bheki Moyo on Saturday night in a six-round win but it wasn’t a clean sweep, after having a point deducted for a rabbit punch in the last round.

That didn’t detract from a dominant display by Welborn who, as soon as the bell sounded, started to get his jab working from the right hand, which was broken in two places last month.

It’s still not 100 per cent but didn’t limit him to fighting with one hand, as was the case in his last fight against Rick Boulter at Walsall Town Hall three weeks previously.

Welborn looked great and his right hand was a formidable weapon, which forced Moyo forward and made him miss as he tried to respond.

In the fifth round, Welborn again worked with the right to throw roaming punches in bunches of four, punishing the body and head of Moyo.

The fight was temporarily halted during the same session when Welborn lost his gum shield before he lost a point in the last round, for a punch to the back of the head.

There had been no prior warning from referee Robert Chalmers but Welborn effectively won every round, despite the 59-54 points decision.

He said: “It’s up to the referee if he wants to take a point off, I just get on with it. That’s the pro game, he kept coming in, I’d go bang and we tied each other up.

“He was a strong lad, he kept coming forward but that’s what I needed, so I could practice my boxing and get the rounds in.”

Welborn’s win was his second in a month and the first time he has fought twice in a year since 2006.

The 25-year-old has been a pro since 2005 and endured periods of inactivity, but has vowed to make the most of the rest of his career.

He said: “I can look forward now and I feel the best I have ever felt, I am loving boxing again.

“There has been ups and downs and I have learned the hard way, but you learn by experience.

“Right now, it’s all I want to do and I am feeling the buzz again.”
