Rushall Olympic win the Senior Cup
Tuesday 17th May 2011, 8:46AM BST.
Rushall Olympic capped off a super season by lifting the Walsall Senior Cup with a 3-0 win over Ellesmere Rangers at the Banks’s Stadium.
Ahmed Obeng was the star of the show with two assists for Lei Brown and a goal of his own, as the Pics won the trophy for the second time in three seasons to add to their Evo-Stik First Division South promotion.
After only two minutes a corner from the right picked out Obeng and his powerful goalbound volley had to be headed clear by a defender, at the expense of another flag kick.
Play moved swiftly to the other end and goalkeeper Chris Gemmell was forced to tip over a looping header.
On 12 minutes Rangers were on the attack again as Andy Ford found himself free through the centre but his low 30-yard strike was safely gathered by Gemmell.
However, Ford was fouled as he unleashed his shot and from Stuart Corns’ resulting free-kick the Rushall No.1 saved comfortably.
Three minutes later, Obeng stooped to meet a centre from the right but could only direct his header wide when well placed.
Olympic survived a big let-off in the 23rd minute when a centre by Kevin Renshaw across the face of goal was somehow headed straight against the far post by Dan Barton and the ball bounced along the goalline before being cleared.
Eight minutes later, Rushall responded when Matt Lewis fed Brown but Obeng was just unable to make contact with his low centre.
Moments later, a good ball from the right by Sean Platt picked out Brown who failed to make a telling connection as keeper Andy Mulliner challenged.
On 34 minutes, Olympic were again fortunate when Chris Cathrall centred from the right but Gary Meredith headed over.
Two minutes before the interval, some superb work by Obeng finally paid dividends as the forward carved his way through the centre and then the right channel, before delivering a pinpoint centre from the by-line to the far post where Brown bravely bundled the ball in from close range.
Eight minutes after the restart, Brown’s intelligent through ball picked out Lewis and he cut inside to drill a low 20-yard strike that had to be smartly tipped around by Mulliner.
Just prior to the hour mark, Gemmell was called into action to tip over a free-kick and soon after Obeng teed-up Brown, who made no mistake with a deadly finish from just inside the box.
The second goal finally appeared to subdue Rangers and, with eight minutes remaining, Obeng capped his man of the match display by claiming a goal of his own.
Lewis wrestled away possession from a defender before playing a fine pass inside to his strike partner, who proceeded to side-step an opponent before rifling low past Mulliner from the edge of the area.
With two minutes remaining, Ellesmere’s night was summed up as substitute Shaun Butler delivered a centre from the left only to see Barton slide in and miss an open goal.
