Stourbridge win to lift the Senior Cup
Thursday 28th April 2011, 7:00AM BST.
Stourbridge lifted the Worcestershire Senior Cup for the first time in 30 years after they upset Blue Square North side Worcester 2-0 at Aggborough.
Ryan Rowe’s first-half double saw Ben Billingham and Craig Slater lift the impressive trophy in front of the jubilant Stourbridge supporters, who celebrated their first silverware since 2001.
Gary Hackett’s side had the better of the opening 45 minutes after surviving a few nervy moments early on, with goalkeeper Lewis Solly pushing a dangerous-looking driven cross from the right by Simon Richman round his near post.
After that though, the Glassboys carried the greater threat going forward for the rest of the half. Billingham saw a shot well saved by Worcester goalkeeper Dean Coleman diving to his left, after James Dyson teed him up.
Stourbridge broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Rowe scored from two yards, after Coleman failed to hold Nathan Bennett’s header from Billingham’s corner.
There was further delight for Hackett’s men 12 minutes later when they doubled their advantage.
Rowe exchanged passes with Billingham, before holding off a defender and shooting low past Coleman into the far corner after Worcester playmaker Tom Thorley had lost possession.
Worcester looked to respond and, on 35 minutes, Matt Birley’s rasping shot was parried away by Solly, after he looked to punish a headed clearance by former Wolves scholar Paul McCone.
But Stourbridge almost had the perfect start to the second half, as McCone sent a diving header wide from another Billingham flag-kick, before it was their turn to defend again.
Worcester twice went close in quick succession just past the hour mark.
A long throw-in from Asa Charlton was headed back to Richman and his low shot from the edge of the box was palmed wide by Solly.
Then a Worcester free-kick was only half-cleared and ex-Wolves midfielder Kevin O’Connor curled a shot narrowly wide from just outside the area.
But the expected heavy pressure never materialised and instead it was Stourbridge who could have enjoyed an even more comfortable lead.
In stoppage time, the Glassboys went close to a third goal, when Billingham’s left-footed effort was beaten away by Coleman after being played in by Drew Canavan.
The Glassboys had to endure another couple of minutes of time added on, but there was no denying the celebrations when the final whistle came.
