Rodley and Hearn get Saxons awards
Monday 25th April 2011, 8:01AM BST.
James Rodley and Jamie Hearn collected the end of season honours following Stourbridge Saxons’ final home game of the season at the weekend.
Flanker Rodley has put in a string of outstanding back row displays and has managed to bag ten tries in the process, a total eclipsed only by centre Charlie Hayter.
And it was thanks to those performances that Rodley was named supporters player of the season.
He said: “I’m delighted. It has been a long tough season not helped by having the break around Christmas, which has meant we had a long run of games without any breaks from January.
“I’m pleased that we have avoided relegation with a couple of good wins and we can now look forward to our final two matches at Macclesfield and Launceston.”
Rodley has combined his duties at Stourton Park with training at Worcester Warriors, together with a number of A-League games for the Championship side this season.
He said: “It has been very tough playing for Worcester as well as for Stourbridge but I’ve really enjoyed it.
“A-League rugby is very open, a showcase for some of the younger players who want to throw the ball around.
“This league is generally a little bit more physical.”
Hearn has played the bulk of his Saxons games at full-back but has also appeared on the wing at Stourton Park.
He was named Directors Player of the Season and presented with his award by Stourbridge director of rugby Neil Mitchell, who paid tribute to the young flyer.
He said: “Jamie has bags of potential and, from our opening match at Coventry, I could tell he was very focussed and committed.
“Ever since then he has come on leaps and bounds and has continued to improve so he was a natural choice for me as player of the season. He has a massive future in the game.
“James Rodley is a massive favourite here at Stourton Park and, like Jamie, is totally focussed on the job in hand.
“He is another sure to have a big future in rugby.”
