Saxons beat Rosslyn Park at home

A dazzling second-half display help steer Stourbridge Saxons to a scintillating win over their London visitors.

And, although a late try from the visitors earned them a losing bonus, there were plenty of positives from Stourbridge whose four-try haul ensured maximum points.

The sides traded penalties early on with Park’s Ross Laidlaw slotting over after three minutes, only for this to be cancelled out soon after by Chris Surman.

Laidlaw then kicked three more penalties to open up a nine-point lead that also saw referee Andrew Jackson lose patience with the home side and send centre Charlie Hayter to the sin bin as the Saxons repeatedly offended in the breakdown.

But it was 14-man Stourbridge who claimed the opening try late in the half when winger Sam Baker skipped inside his opposite number before darting the 15 metres to the line.

The second-half saw the home side dominate from the whistle with powerful runs from Tom Jarvis and Liam Wordley signalling their intent.

Four minutes into the half, a penalty was kicked to the corner and, when Thomas gathered the ball at the resulting line-out, he was driven over the line to hand his side a slender one-point lead.

The Stourbridge pressure was relentless and Betts dived in for his try on 55 minutes, Jamie Hearn taking over the kicking duties to duly land the conversion for a 20-12 lead.

Park’s Jon Barrett was binned following a trip but the visitors were back to their full quota by the time Hayter ran in the fourth bonus-bagging try.

It was the score of the game, starting deep in the Saxons half when Hearn took off on an arcing 40-metre run. He fed Baker on the right who in turn linked with Hayter who sped clear to the line, Hearn kicking the extras.

All the visitors had to show for their second-half efforts was another Laidlaw penalty, but they finally crossed the line with the final play of the game when Laidlaw found space wide on the left.

Needless to say, he slotted over the conversion but not even that late blip could take the shine off a sizzling Stourbridge display.
