Black Country derby set to get new date
Monday 31st January 2011, 11:25AM GMT.
Wolves and Albion were today set to confirm the Black Country derby at The Hawthorns will take place on Sunday, February 20, with a 12 noon kick-off.
The first top-flight clash between the arch-rivals for almost 27 years was postponed from December 18 and re-arranged for Tuesday, February 22.
But Wolves’ 1-0 defeat to Stoke in the FA Cup yesterday means both clubs are now free on the weekend of February 19-20.
Club officials were due to speak today to confirm the new date, but they must wait for the Premier League to make the final decision.
Meanwhile, Wolves boss Mick McCarthy defended the size of the gate after just 11,967 turned up at Molineux yesterday.
With over 2,500 Stoke fans, there were barely 9,000 home supporters for the fourth-round tie, one of four home matches in 18 days. “There are a lot of skint people around — nobody’s got any money and it’s maybe austerity measures,” said McCarthy.
McCarthy also felt Wolves could have had another penalty in addition to Nenad Milijas’s saved spot-kick.
“I thought we might have had another one when Berra had an elbow in the chops,” he said, referring to Robert Huth’s clash with the defender in the second half.
