Jerome Thomas still eyes the derby

Winger Jerome Thomas has promised Albion will give fans a day to remember in the rearranged Black Country derby after the game was frozen off.

The Baggies’ first Premier League meeting with Wolves, scheduled for yesterday, fell victim to the weekend snow that decimated the football programme.

But Thomas reckons the team will go all out to make up for the disappointment of the postponement when the game is played in the New Year.

He said: “The fans were really looking forward to it as well but it’s just been rescheduled.

“Whatever date they give us for the rearranged game we will prepare the same, as we did this week and be 100 per cent focused for it so we give the fans a good game next time around.

“We always suspected the game would be called off because the snow was coming down so heavily.

“It is frustrating it was called off because it was such a big game. But the staff all worked overtime to try to get the game on.

“People keep saying they can’t remember the last time a game was called off at the Hawthorns.

“A big thanks to the staff for making the effort but, unfortunately, we couldn’t beat the snow.”

Officials from the clubs began talking today over possible dates for the re-arranged game but Di Matteo’s focus has switched to the Boxing Day trip to Bolton.

However, Thomas believes the weekend postponement could actually help the team’s preparations for that fixture and the other festive games at home to Blackburn and Manchester United.

He said: “It gives us an extra week to prepare for the Bolton game.

“Peter Odemwingie had only trained for two days and a couple of the lads have niggles, so it gives them more time to recover.

“It might be a blessing in disguise but, then again, Wolves had injury problems as well with Kevin Doyle, who is their major threat, out so it works both ways.

“It’s going to be a busy period over Christmas and into January, with the FA Cup starting.

“I think we’ve got the strength in depth to cope but this break will probably do everyone good.

“We had yesterday and today off and that’s given us chance to see our families before Christmas and squeeze in all the last-minute shopping.

“We’ll be back in training on Tuesday to get focused for Bolton on Boxing Day. We trained outside on Saturday, believe it or not!

“The ground staff managed to clear an area at the training ground and we trained in the snow.

“It was a good laugh!”
