Villa Reserves 1 Albion Reserves 1

Nathan Delfouneso scored a late equaliser to earn Villa’s second string a share of the spoils at Bodymoor Heath.

The young striker cancelled out a Lateef Elford-Alliyu penalty that had handed the Baggies an early lead in the FA Premier Reserve League yesterday.

Villa handed vital match action to new signing Robert Pires and striker John Carew, who is battling back from injury, while Albion fielded senior defensive trio Gianni Zuiverloon, Abdoulaye Meite and Joe Mattock.

But it was young goalkeeper Luke Daniels who starred for the Baggies with a string of excellent saves.

Kevin MacDonald’s Villa side remain neck and neck with Arsenal at the top of the Southern Group.

Albion went ahead on five minutes when Romaine Sawyers went down under the combined weight of Derrick Williams and Shane Lowry and Elford-Alliyu beat Andy Marshall from the spot.

Daniels saved from Carew and Lowry before half-time and Lowry again after the break but he could not stop Delfouneso on 71 minutes, the youngster racing onto Eric Lichaj’s throw-in before firing across the goalkeeper to score.
